Just a quickie on pit locos,Warren.

The locomotoves designed by Richard Trevithick originally pulled tubs up
out of open cast coal mines using steel cables. The steam engines were
stationary and in sheds 'up top'.

Yes, Trevithick was the first to attempt a steam powered vehicle, slow and
not very efficient. He than had the idea of putting it on rails, which
broke under the weight. The cast iron rails were replaced with wrought
iron which made early locomotives feasible. The first train made a 91/2
mile journey up a very gradual slope near Merthyr Tydfil in south Wales,
pulling 10 tons of steel and 16 people in one of the carriages.

The demonstration was made in 1804 due to a bet made by James Watt, a
competitor of Trevithick's of UKP 500. Watt never paid. The loco used was
designed and built in 1802 by Trevithick and his partner.

The rest has all been said.
