Hi Bob and all,

When used as an adjective we have this:
3. moving or able to move, as by self-propulsion.
Collins says you're right but used this way it's a very broad term which
would qualify me as a locomotive. (Never mind the smoke and steam.)

Yup, underground they used ponies and mules because Clydesdales wouldn't
fit down the tunnels. Oh they saw daylight, they had to come out of the
tunnels sometime, you wouldn't expect the miners to unhitch them and pull
rakes of cars themselves now would you? <bork>

BTW, Puffing Billy isn't a nick for steam locomotive, it's the name OF a
locomotive. When I'm on the BBS I don't have my resources available and
my memory is crap so sorry, I can't say at this time exactly where
Puffing Billy and friends run on that tourist track in Australia. What I
DO remember is the last operating steamer at Carnarvon is Lil' Bugger but
I can't say what may have survived the flood and what ended up in the
mud. Pichi Richi on the other hand is the name of the SA switchback where
a steamer still oprates for the benefit of the tourists. They use a
Diesel too but they never leave the switchback even though it's still
connected to the main. Regular passenger service has bypassed the
switchback for years and almost spelled the end of Pichi Richi saved just
barely by a preservation society.

Oh, since you mentioned the paddle steamers I should mention the few left
nearly died in the drought. Now I wonder what's happening since the
situation reversed, your rivers aren't like the Mississippi that Paul
Robeson sang about... Old Man River, he jus' keeps rollin' along.
