>Hi Peter The CBer and all good buddies out there in Radio Land,

Well hello Warren CRS'er from another GRS'er ... and to everyone
who happened to be an early bird on what is Internationally kown
as CB.

>I never watched any of those dumb CB movies, I lived in one.
>I'm oh so familiar with those "antenna parties" so it's no
>wonder one was featured in a CB movie. If nothing else from
>your description at least it showed that hams have been right
>all along, CBers are a bunch of alpha hotels.

Well Warren, I laughed at them, and thats because they were
further from the truth, where I was operating. I think in many
other places users operated properly.

In CANADA "CB" was termed "GRS", and our first users were hams,
and to this day, with the fad all over, there is still "hams"
on CB here.

Perhaps the "hams" were right? The people behind the activitys
of "Master Control" were all "hams". Their targets were the
users, and not the FCC for implimenting what the US Congress
put through as a bill for veterans in 1947. We never had
that stuff in CANADA. Our users, were mostly familys, and
there seemed to be a ham in every family. Not all family
members want ham radio as a hobby, so GRS filled the bill
for their needs. Might also add that our channels 1,2 and 3
were ham frequncys until the 40 channel radios came out.
Having hams on there, really confused the American CRS users
as well the units used which average a few 100 watts.
I regretted the day, 1,2 and 3 were given over to the GRS
as it took away a neat connection, as well help for those
wanting to be hams. < Lots of CW nights on ch 2 >

>Is it any wonder why I got out while the getting was good?
>Yup, when it turned ugly I'd had just about enough and went
>on to better things, after a decade on haiatus from
>transmitting (I kept the scanner and SW receiver) I returned
>under my present callsign having left KMD7606 far behind.

My CB'ing or GRS ended in 1980 big time, when I moved out of
the city to the lake. The other problem too was the incredible
skip conditions...just a solid howl of noise and a mad mix
of voices, those calling people locally and then also those
trying to get a contact somewhere in the world.

The site here is just not a good locale to get any coverage
with the CB. It all went into mothballs until I was at
the TV station and the hammies there got me going on getting
the ham radio going...so for my family I also got the CB
going, which worked out with the boat as it did in Toronto.

>I didn't have a QSL which is why you didn't see mine in
>Frequency but probably would have, I knew those guys and
>talked to them frequency... er, frequently. It's only a
>short hop from Queens to "the Jersey side". For those who
>haven't been paying attention, most of the QSL cards displayed
>in the movie were actual CB cards from around the NYC/NJ
>metro area. BTW, that dinosaur Heathkit is an oldie but a
>goodie, there are plenty of them still on the air.
>I used the 6M version, it was a great DX magnet and I have
>the log (and a few QSLs) to prove it.

Noticed them and the designs... sort of neat.

>Hey, did you REALLY expect Joe Sixpack to know that Amateur
>Radio even exists? On rare occasions when someone asks what
>my strange looking antennas are for I just say ham radio,
>kinda like CB only better. THAT they understand and don't
>ask any more questions, good, answers are wasted on them.

Same here. I have an insider joke, about calling it
Super CB. The jammers with their nicknames, which I never
used...I used my callsign...well on CB they disappear after
a few miles...but the hammie jammmers cover the whole Province
which isn't enjoyable. Just yesterday, I had another neighbour
ask the question, and she had never heard of ham radio...so
must be really outta date, but it doesn't matter, as there
is so many wonderful people out there to chat with, or meet
new people via the nets.

>No, this is not the opening of another "ham radio is dead"
>debate!

I don't think so either. Not in the immediate future.
When I read the ham is dead stuff, it seems those posting
are going to something else anyway, and it seems to be
Internet...and for some reason they leave the ham is dead
comments.

I do however see more and more schools here that have removed
the school's Ham Radio Station and replaced them with the
computer lab and Internet access.

Checking with the clubs...and there are over flow classes for
those wanting to get their ham radio tickets...so ...mmmm no
not dead yet.

>Uh oh, I can just picture Rusty paddling around with a
>lifejacket, does he wear a sweater and boots in winter on
>the ice? (;->)

 OK ... KMD7606 ... I'll take a picture of Rusty in his
outfit and send it to you. If I had any of my old
"wallpaper" cards made of wall paper I'd send that too

As for winter, well when he had his problems as a pup he
did have a red sweater, no booties, and as for being on ice
well he was a real devil on the ice in the middle of a ball
hockey game on ice. He played the man....ooouch !!! what
a player. Two minute penalty to Rusty.. for charging,
roughing , biting and fighting...and then game over, and he
was ejected.... aaaaaah yes.

>Hey, you're a Canuk so why not go in business selling little
>ice skates for dogs? Mmmm, sounds better than a squirrel on
>water skis behind an RC boat, maybe he'll get on The Planet's
>Funniest Animals.

I have seen the squirrel. But no plans to make any skates.
My mother once made leather boots for the dog, when he split
his paw wide open. That was a mess...and her efforts produced
a lacked boot which she even got offers to re-produce but didn't.

OK Warren. Enjoyed the exchange. I will search for Rusty's
picture in his red sweater, during the fall, when he broke
someone's ankle... vicious dog. Don't have one of his
short lived hockey career, but he wasn't invited out to
play again on the pond.

HEY! we have gone over some interesting material for a movie.

One of these days, to be serious, we should encourage movie
producers to show the reality of Amateur Radio. We have done
in the sprite of community service, many projects with other
groups in our local areas. I might even add that even REACT
the CB ch 9 monitor group has been taken over by Ham Radio
and has been expanded into other services... SO we are NOT
dead.

There are so many examples of Ham Radio Operators going out of
their ways to help someone else, even if it is somewhere else
in the world.

Oh well... gotta go...Maria and I are going to have some tea
and sit outside and watch the world go by.... ttfn
