Hi Gordon and all,
Quite right but your knowledge of early electrical experimentation is
slightly off so here's filling in the blanks. The demo closely resembes
the hardware used by Hertz, that is the loops. His famous illustration
shows one variation, the transmitter used a dipole but still the receiver
was a loop with a ball gap which arced when held in the near field of the
dipole.
Tesla's famous coil operated in the 100-300KHz range as they do today and
one of the later versions had a tertiary "amplifier" coil. Being I find
the scientist and his work utterly facinating I found a wealth of
information on the Web, you'd be amazed at what you can find on him and
many more famous scientists and inventors.
As for the lamp, that's another Tesla invention and the inverter ballast
such as the ones found in compact lamps used to replace light bulbs uses
a mineature solid state version of the Tesla coil. Now when it comes to
lighting a lamp in the manner you described, in a strong electric field
you need no connection to the power source, RF lights it up quite nicely.
Those long bars make excellent lighted twirling batons that'll amaze your
neighbors watching that crazy ham dancing in the moonlight. It works best
if you stand near a ground mounted vertical antenna, you don't need a
whole lot of power to cover the average back yard. Yup, that pretty much
put the finishing touch on my repitoir of explosions and clouds of smole
by day and zapping noises and flashing blue light by night, to this day
I'm known as Young Frankenstein and oh, I'm about the same age as Mel
Brooks so no, >>> I <<< was the original movie.
Come Igor, we must tend to the monster, Bob is getting restless!
