Well Andy, SP mail isn't too bad most of the time between UK and this neck
of the woods. Your bulletin to WW took about 30 minutes to get to the BBS
that I use, and a SP message from a UK station took about 2 hours. (Posted
at a GB7 BBS).
SP mail does occasionally get delayed. On the 15th of Oct I received 3 SP
messages which had been delayed. I promptly replied to all 3; these being
sent out at 1100 hrs GMT. I had an acknowledgement back from a UK BBS at
1500 GMT on the 16th and the reply from the UK station 5 hours later.
(Thanks John.) The acknowledgement took 20 minutes to get to VK2WI BBS
and the SP about 80 minutes. So the times between UK and Australia are
not vastly different for SB mail and SP mail most of the time Andy.
Another example of SP mail was a flood of error messages for a programme
that I posted as a 7plus bulletin. I had scores of automated SP mail from
all over Europe just a day or two after posting the 7plus bulletin.
Strangely though, only one error message from the UK. These were all replied
to and the acknowledgements from most of the BBSs came back fairly quickly
too. Sadly, only two of the stations who sent the automated error messages
bothered to reply to my mail.
So is Europe to Australia DX or not? Maybe not, seeing that most of the
journey would be via the internet.
I still reckon that if a station puts a CQ bulletin on packet radio, they
should be courteous enough to accept replies via packet radio. That's the
only way he'll get one from me, that's for sure.
