Yes, us codgers remember the halcyon days from perhaps 1950 - 1975 when
amateurs prided themselves in how cheaply they'd got on the air to put
out a clean signal.

Today, they take pride in how much they've spent on Kenyasuicom's latest
state of the art/soon to be obsolete offering - the "@%#$ MK111" or
whatever. A year later it's on e-bay 'cos the dealer won't take it in
part-exchange for a MK1V which has more knobs, bells and whistles.

Nowadays, some don't even want to use a pair of scissors to cut a length
of wire to make a G5RV or whatever, let alone build a rig. Few could
aspire the dizzy heights of Hancock's level of expertise.

"Is raining not in Tokyo?"

That said, the Elecraft kit-built Transceiver on ARRL tests outperformed
just about every commercial rig on the market, so it's still possible to
build your own rig, even though someone else designed it and sourced all
the parts.

It doesn't make economic sense though - it's a labour of love.

What I think is really bizarre is when you hear people on air saying
"I must congratulate you on your fine audio...."

Huh?

It's a piece of consumer electronics, like your telly or microwave oven!

What is it about amateur radio that causes some people to take on such
an odd persona? Can't they just say "it sounds nice" or something?

If they went into someone's living room and said "I must congratulate
you on the pin-sharp picture and fine audio quality of your Sony TV"
they'd be sectioned under the Mental Health Act as clinically insane
and taken into care for their own safety.

Best wishes
