Why not get a CB radio and find out for yourself, Sandy.
I'm sure there good bulletins and junk bulletins on CB just as there is on
amateur packet. The point is that OUR licence does not permit us to
communicate with non-amateur stations except in very clearly defined
situations.
It is one thing for a licensed amateur to relay some non-copyrighted written
information which he thinks the rest of use might find useful (whether it's
from the internet, from CB or from the back of a Corn Flakes packet) -- it's
quite a different thing to set up unofficial, illegal gateways between
amateur radio and CB.
It's interesting to note that the amateur stations who are questioning what
all the fuss is about are the very same stations who have, in the past,
stated openly that they see very little difference between amateur radio and
CB.
Our hobby's steady but relentless decline in technical standards and in the
"image" it portrays to the general public has, in my opinion, been due in no
small part to the underhand, undemocratic, stealth tactics employed by these
very same people.
This hobby is dying - not because there aren't enough technical people out
there but because those people also now see very little difference between
our hobby, CB or the local taxi driver. You don't need a degree in rocket
science to see why.
73 John.
