I too wonder exactly how many ex CBers are fully licenced having been
introduced to the hobby, as I was, (1979 pre legal CB). I know of quite a few
who were active on CB some years back, and who now spend a great deal of time
parading their superiority to anyone who will listen to them, (shades of the
morse and muffins brigade argument).

I have taught quite a few new entrants to our hobby to a sufficient standard to
get them through the RAE, and currently have three classes running which
involve some (younger) CBers. Now what interests me is that almost all of my
past pupils that were involved in CB in some way prior to being amateur
licenced, are still involved, (or at least are still active) on the CB
channels. Now whether they would want to admit this, is of course another
matter. I feel that it should be mentioned, that as far as my experience of
teaching electronics, and radio is concerned, (10yrs), those who have some
experience of CB, are considerably easier to teach to RAE standard, and
certainly in the case of the more "senior citizens" are helped in many respects
by their CB background.

As we have had an RSGB President for the last year, who came into the hobby via
CB, I fail to understand the general antagonism toward the "other hobby radio"
displayed by the RSGB at almost every opportunity.

Having spent years repairing, modifying, and using CB, I have never found any
difference between the people that use the CB service, and the fully licenced
amateurs. If originally, Cb had regs laid down that were at least enforceable
to a degree by the RIS, and calls had been issued from day one, I daresay the
operating procedure would have been better.

I have never yet received any decent road reports via 2mt/70cms, and is one
reason why I will not take my Cb out of the car, - not only that, how many lady
truckers do you find on the motorway by using your all singing all dancing
Amateur Band black boxes, that you can't find a lot quicker on your thirty quid
CB?
