Hello!
>>The net/rom network in Sweden is only crap!
>If you think so, write an article in QTC about it, because if it is true
>it is time to wake up some of the sysops that are responsible of the
>network. Then you might have a better chance to improve it.
If there should be some articles should they be about modern nodes compared to
each other, good working packet networks in other countries etc.
That would be interesting and give us some perspective, which we in sweden
doen't have much of when it comes to packet.
And also about what should be done so that we will have a packet network even
in the future!
>Make sure you make it clear what is crap, and why you think so.
>Make sure to say that is is the complete network in Sweden that is crap,
>not just the part in your area.
>Say what improvements you want. Detailed if possible.
>You will surely get a debate.
>If we agree whith you, we will surely get to an agreement what to
>do to fix the network.
Packet radio is a better medium for this low level discussion.
You must be aware of that the exact agruments we are using now have been used
many times before in this ongoing discussion.
>I will be waiting for your article.
Why don't you write an artice about why net/rom not should be replaced under
no circumstances.
And why net/rom was considered old ans useless ten yeard ago, in many european
countries and there for replaced.
But for use in Sweden is it just perfect!
I think it is a bit sad, the only agument for net/rom is that it is used.
It is limiting the possibillity to use higher speedlinks with nay sucess etc
and soon wil we have no packet network in this part of the world.
And there seems not to be very much interest in the packet radio entwork any
more.
I don't know if people like you take any aggressions aginst net/rom or bpq
personally! Or why every one seems so conervative, no one what to try out
something new, no one ever does any experimens of any kind.
It is often for econimocal reson I guess, do't want to replace tnc2s , use a
node compter etc.
But not only econimical reasons I think, also the lack of knowledge and
interest shows sometimes.
It would not cost very much to make the network better!
>If you have such nodes, it is because of a poor radio-link.
Also that is a problem on some places.
>It is the use of "your own node", as a frontend to your packetstation
>that most of the time causes the trouble, as they are not 24h/day-stations.
>Used as a frontend to a BBS causes no problem, as long as it is up 24h/day.
>If you have problems with stations that pops up and down, don't blame BPQ
>ore any other software for that.
That is a problem caused by that it is possible to do like that in a net/rom
network!
I don't blame any one!
In a nother kind of network would there be no souch problem.
But it is not the major problem with net/rom!
It is possible to kick out nodes like that from the routing table, so if that
would have been the only problem would it have been just fine.
>Make the user that causes the problem to change their behaviour, or change
>the software in use.
>Don't start a crusade against the software, in this case BPQ.
>It is the WRONG use of the software that should be stopped, not the
>software itself.
The reason bpq should be raplaced it that it is an old net/rom node that
doesn't work good!
I have tried to explain the differences in how the routing works in modern
nodes, the use of rtt instead od quallity, header compression, more often
updated network information, how a connection is set up etc.
The use of rtt is very important and used aslo by thenetnode in its improved
net/rom now adays.
A better nodes should be used for a better network.
>That is very easy to solve. You are not stuck with 30 minute intervals in
>the routing broadcast. You can have them every minute if you like.
>The reason why 30 minutes is widely used is because the nodes is used in
>stable links, no popping up or down.
>For the majority of the nodes it is no need for shorter intervals.
If I change but no one else doesn't it help very much, the routing isn't much
better since every other information is old.
And this is not an isolated problem, it is also combined with that the
quality of net/rom doesn't work, the information sent out is false any way.
It often doen't at all tell what way to route is the best.
You both have to use rtt, real information about what time it taktes so send a
frame and get replay at the different links used combined with shorter node
information updates.
>The problem is still the "personal nodes".
No, that is not the major problem of net/rom but a side effect of using it.
>(Note that this is not my real opinion. Only to show how I easy can
> reverse the discussion)
Don't seems to take this very seriously do you?
Tcp/ip over a as low speed network as this is just a to bad joke to be fun.
>You mean like this ?: (For BPQ as an example)
>Application <-> packetdriver <-> protocoldriver <-> modemdriver <-> modem

> (configurable) (fixed) (any from a list)
>The packetdriver sends it to the protocoldriver, etc...
>A re-sending, acks, responsetime etc.. of any packet is handeled by the
>packetdriver.
>The protocoldrivers job is to code/decode to/from ax25/netrom.
>The modemdriver interfaces the protocoldriver to the modem in use.
>(KISS-modem, NET/ROM-node, network-card, scc-card, etc...)
More or less!
>>>And just because it it easy to setup does not make it the most suitable
>>>node to use. It has to have more features that just an easy setup.
>>The adaptive parameters makes is easy to set up and also very good!
>>So it is both the best packet driver avalaible and easy to setup!
>
>Does it have any more features than adaptive parameters ?
>A correct setup can eliminate most of the problems.
It also have the "packet sammler" function, txd measnurement, very good l1
drivers (6pack inst4ead of kiss) and some more.
A as good setup as with adaptive parameters can you never get as long as you
use static parameters.
If you use a link with only two stations is it possible to set the parameters
rather good, but not on user ports, link freq with more thatn one station etc.
If you use static prameters must you change them rather often, and who does
that?
There is nothing better with static parameters, using dynmaic parameters
instead only makes the performance of your links better.
You will get the most out of the hardware you already got!
Especially on user ports is the adaaptive parameters good, but they alwasy
lead to improved performance.
And a correct setup of those static paramters is nothing that will ever happen
in most places, most users don't know what to do with them, or why!
>Best packetdriver available ?, only because of adaptive parameters ?
No, because there aslo is alot of good modem drivers avalaible and an
extraordinary performance, much better than any other I have tried.
But now is it also possible to use flexnet drivers with x-net and thenetnode.
6pack instead of kiss is also used by other good node systems, packet drivers
etc.
>...snip... huge signaturetext removed
A singatures like this is shrinked in to nothig by the compressed forward, so
don't you worry about that!
