Hello All, & thanks for taking the time to read this. Right, down to the
main problem, I have a 1989 Honda CR250 Motocross (2 stroke) bike, about 4
weeks ago, while on the local field, it became quite sluggish, especially
while accelerating, until it eventually stalled when I slowed to about 10mph,
It refused to restart when given many leg movements on the old kickstart, &
I had to push it home, (luckily only 500 yards away!), 2 weeks later, I got
the bike out, & still it refused to start, it had always been fairly easy to
start in the past, usually just pulling the choke on, & a few kicks, no probs
, but not now, on investigating, I found the spark was being generated to the
plug OK, but I put a new one on just in case, still no luck, I checked fuel
was being fed freely from the tank, the air filter was not blocked, but still
no luck ? After a few while, I decided to check the twin front radiators, &
found them to be quite dry !, so I then filled them with water, & proceded to
restart the bike, after many many kicks, it did start, but not before it
gave quite a few loud spitting type backfire noises from the carb air input
area ?, on an average of 12 attempts on the kickstart, it would give at least
4 -5 of the above backfires, 3 -4 near starts (only with the accelarator on),
before eventually starting, what I need to know, is could the fact I ran the
rads dry have caused the engine block to overheat, & develop some type of
damage, if so what could be the remedy ?, any suggestions would be most
appreciated, as getting the bike restarted once the engine is hot is nearly
impossible now, & I dont fancy having to push it home every time it stalls !!
Just a few final pointers............
I am using the correct mixture of 2 stroke engine oil to petrol ratio:
The radiators now are filled & are not losing any water:
There is the correct type of spark plug fitted (new):
The carb operates OK & is clean inside with no signs of wear:
The air filter (sponge) was clean:
The coil pickup lead is not worn between the rads:
The exhaust does not appear to be blocked, in that when the bike does
start, the emmisions are as they were before the problem started:
When started, the bike accelerates & performs with no apparent problems,
except for a slight lack of top end speed:
Hoping some bright bike mechanic can shed some light on this annoying
problem....................
