Joey Dunlop was back in his winning ways with a vengeance in this
morning's Lightweight TT when he clocked up victory number 22 with a near
record breaking performance on his Michelin-shod Honda Britian RS 250R.
The Ulster publican was invloved in a close battle with another Michelin
man, Phillip McCallen for the first couple of laps and I was struggling a
bit on the final one," said Dunlop after winning his third consecutive 250
TT. "I didn't think it was worth risking the time to make a tyre change
and the Michelins were still working well enough right up to the finish."
Dunlop set off on the final two laps with an 18 second lead but by the
finish he was 47 seconds clear of second placed Welshman Ian Lougher who
was only 1.4 seconds ahead of Lancastrian John McGuinness on an Aprilia at
the end of a four way battle for the runner-up spot that also included New
Zealander Shaun Harris and Ulsterman Gary Dynes.
Michelin riders featured in four of the first five places in the four lap,
150 mile race.
