I am not exactly a bachelor, Pete, I have been married twice, widowed
once then divorced once, so, I think I have served my sentence, a total of
26 years !

Throw in some girlfriends, before, after and in between and I think I can
say i have observed the behaviour of the species.

The idea of man inventing the telephone,CB,cellphone, came to me a long
time ago. No 2 was well into CB though she didn't care how they worked.
The fact that she was married to the local 'Rig Doctor' in a house full of
CBs ranging from a high power home brew to a tiny handie 100 mW AM, meant
that she could talk to her friends from pretty well anywhere. The fact
that I could switch from a horizontal 1/2 wave dipole to a 5/8 wave
vertical on a
high mast meant that I could receive her from up to 6 miles away,
depending o skip and QRN/QRM. She even did some DX. She was very popular
with the Italians who were a pain on CB with their 2KW 'linears' and multi
element beams. Girls were unusual on CB, even more than AR, particularly
girls in their 20s. It made me smile to hear them struggling with English
to try to chat her up.

BTW, one of the reasons that the 6.67 MHz 'pirate' band was popular was
thet, from the UK, the Italians were just out of reach. I don't know if
you ever have that kind of problem in Canada or N' America.

The popular thing among young girls now, so I'm told is to take pictures
of themselves or their friends, especially when drunk, in a state of
undress. They are very good at using blue tooth to put these on the 'net.
Sadly, I am too old now to ever have a pretty girl send a nude opic of
herself to me.

I just console myself with the fact that the 60s and 70s were far more fun
in England without cellphones or other hi tech gear. In the absence of
PCs, I just had to content myself with things like joininga couple of
local am dram societies. Young men were outnumbered about 4:1 in those and
in great demand - happy days !

I did set up the webcam and mic /earphones for a woman across the road so
that she could talk to her friends on some chat site. I was still on dial
up then so couldn't do it myself, in fact I wouldn't know how to. She
seemed very happy to spend all the time her husband was at work talking to
people via PC and was delighted they could see her at last.

I suppose it's no worse than packet really....

Just the next step, I suppose. man invents it and mends it, woman uses it.

Just out of interest, do people on CB still use that old jargon ? When I
was licenced in 1990, a couple of hams who were ex CB gave me a lecture.
They said "We hope you won't be talking the way they did on CB or no one
will talk to you." What they didn't know was that the days of 1-9 for a
copy....roger dee...got your ears on....good buddy...etc. were long gone.
By 1990 people chatted on CB at high speed, passing the topic around in an
ad hoc, pre arranged order, they didn't even use 'over' unless it it was
absolutly necessary. Rubber Duck was long dead. They were far faster than
radio hams, partly because there were no callsigns every 15 mins. There
was no shouting down mics, mainly because everyone used companders like
the Turner +3B, except when mobile when they used noise cancelling mikes.

The authorities had given up trying to prosecute so people felt safe.
Sadly, that is partly what brought about the death of CB. When it was
illegal and people were using disguised aerials with good hiding places,
then it was fun and we had some colourful people, all illegal together.

By 1995, the clever, fun people were gone, replaced by the scum of
society.
As I said in anither bull: that was when I gave up but it was a painless
transition to packet which was getting interesting by then with better
programmes like NPFPMS and my favourite, TPK.

Have fun, Pete and don't let your XYL see this. I do have a very secure
version of PGP but thats not allowed. As you say, I can say these things -
you couldn't possibly comment.
