Why South Island does sound familiar to me. Was there a prison there after the
American colonies were closed to transportation for hardened English criminals
perhaps? You know, those little boys and girls who stole a crust of bread
because they were starving. Possibly not as I do not think NZ had such
prisons. Does anyone know?
Reminds me of an interesting tale. I was given a list of English executions
once. It ran from early times to around 1806 if memory serves. I have it
somewhere. An A4 sheet of one-liners, each giving a name, their crime. and
punishment, often they became transportees. A few nobility were included. One
was executed for returning from transportation. I was told years later that it
"could be" false as many such (False) lists were thought to be around though
why one might do this is uncertain. Money? Perhaps. I might even scan it and
send it out as copyright is well gone by now I imagine.
