Hi Ian and readers,

Oh, take no sides, Mark and I were having a bit of a go. If you could
have seen us we had our tongues so far in cheek we looked like a couple
of hamsters. (;->)

Now here's a bit of an FYI for you. As you know, Americans tend to use
incorrect terms in common speech but have no problems making themselves
understood, at least to those who ask rather than nit picking. No, that
was not a subtile reference to you byt rather of several who are in that
habit.

Your example of "aeroplane" vs "airplane" is prime. In the US, a "fying
machine" was originally an aeroplane and only fairly recently did it
become airplane. We got our aeronautical terms mixed up, an airplane is
an integral part of an aeroplane, an aerodynamic planing surface, an air
plane.

Now "alternate" and "alternative" must be taken in context in order to
understand the proper meaning. Admittedly, Americans don't seem to know
this. Taking an alternate route is making an alternative decision. Oh,
now don't you dare go on about alternative current unless you're making a
choice of power systems. (;->)

BTW, your confusion is due to your misunderstanding of it's use, be it
verb or pronoun.

Yes, we do have fun with our developing language as long as we ignore
Bush and the talking heads on TV who seem to all be rowing the same boat.

AAAAAaaaaahhhhh! Now THIS is a breath of fresh air after suffering
through some foul smelling gas from some people on a bean diet. Well, at
least some good came out of it!
