Joint ESA-CNES Status Report N 1

Ariane 502 Flight Preparations

Ariane 502 is now entering its final preparation phase. This
first status report presents the main ongoing activities and
expected results.

1. Qualification of a new filter for the control loop of the
cryogenic stage is progressing satisfactorily.
A number of tests, including flight simulations, are still in
progress at the Functional Simulation Facility at Aerospatiale,
Les Mureaux (France).
The final decision on whether or not to introduce a filter
modification will be taken after full qualification which is
expected on 17 October.

2.The flight program has been finalised and is presently
undergoing a number of checks and tests leading to the newly
defined target launch date .

3. Furthermore, the results of the verification tests under limit
loads on the qualification upper skirt of the cryogenic stage at
CASA, Madrid (Spain) are expected to be available by 10
October, by which date the other outstanding action items,
mostly of a formal nature, should also have been cleared.

Following a detailed evaluation with Aerospatiale, the
industrial architect, of the technical tasks for the coming
weeks, ESA and CNES have agreed to a schedule leading to a
start of the final launch campaign on 13 October aiming at an
ARIANE 502 launch as from 28 October.
