….Formal SKYWARN Activation for this morning into early afternoon has been
cancelled. SKYWARN Self-Activation maybe needed for parts of the area and will
monitor for Ops at NWS if heavy rainfall and/or strong winds in the south cause
problems or the heavy wet snow in northern areas causes issues later today….
….Once Thursday’s storm has passed, Eyes will turn to a potentially major storm
Sunday Night into Tuesday with the potential for very heavy precipitation, very
strong winds and the potential for coastal flooding....
Precipitation is working its way in from New Jersey and Eastern New York and is
making its way into Western New England from the CT River Valley to Southwest
New Hampshire. Temperatures have been a bit warmer than expected resulting in
less of a threat of snow and ice across much of the region although heavy snow
and ice is still possible in the areas that remain under Winter Storm Warnings
with more moderate amounts in the remaining advisory areas. A Wind Advisory is
now in effect for South Coastal Massachusetts and Rhode Island including Cape
Cod and the Islands from Noon-5 PM today. As the precipitation moves into the
area, it will come down heavy for a 2-4 hour period potentially resulting in
urban and poor drainage flooding as well as sharp small stream rises along and
south of the Mass. Pike later this morning and this afternoon. Formal SKYWARN
Activation for this morning into early this afternoon has been cancelled.
SKYWARN Self-Activation and remote reporting will be utilized for this storm
for now but we’ll continue to monitor for Ops at NWS as we head into this
afternoon where heavy rainfall and/or strong winds could cause problems or if
heavy wet snow causes tree and power line issues in the Winter Storm Warning
area.
Once Thursday’s storm passes, a far more significant storm could affect the
region Sunday Night through Tuesday. The storm could bring very heavy
precipitation, very strong winds and the potential for coastal flooding. The
storm is still 4-5 days away but models have been very consistent in a
potentially significant storm affecting the region in this timeframe. Refer to
the Hazardous Weather Outlook from NWS Taunton within this coordination message
and the Marine Weather Statement on this storm via the link below:
