A Winterlike Nor’easter type storm will affect Southern New England late tonight and Thursday Afternoon with heavy snow in northwest parts of the area and a mix of snow ice and rain in interior locations north and west of a Boston to Providence line.
A Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 7-11 AM EDT Thursday for Southwest and South-Central New Hampshire and Northwest and North-Central Massachusetts for 4-8ö of heavy wet snow with isolated higher amounts in the higher elevations possible. This wet snow may be sufficient to cause tree and power line damage in some locations causing isolated power outages. If the snow is more than forecast, infrastructure issues could increase further but if temperatures are warmer and snowfall is less than expected, the impact will be less over the region. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 9 AM-11 PM Thursday for Northern Middlesex County Massachusetts and Eastern Hillsborough County, NH. Amounts will be slightly less than the warning area as more ice and rain mixes in this region but amounts will most likely be 2-6ö with isolated higher amounts in the higher elevations.
Winter Weather Advisories are also in effect from mid-morning through early afternoon for Northern Connecticut, Northwest Rhode Island, South-Central and Northeast Massachusetts from Norfolk County northward for a mixture of snow, sleet, freezing rain and rain that will turn over to rain by mid-afternoon. Snowfall amounts will be under 6ö and range 1-4ö in this area with isolated higher amounts in the northern parts of the advisory areas and in the higher elevations.
SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Taunton has been tentatively requested from 8 AM-2 PM EDT Thursday but could change Thursday Morning and will be addressed again Thursday Morning with a brief coordination message sent out on this event on the activation status of SKYWARN. Reports from various terrain locations of changeover in precipitation, snowfall totals and any wet snow damage will be helpful for this event.
It is noted that a more powerful ocean storm has potential to affect the region Sunday into Monday. This could have a significant impact on the Boston Marathon and other Patriots Day activities if the storm verifies but is still several days out in time. All are requested to monitor future forecasts. A link to the Marine Weather Statement is listed below:
