Hello to all….
….Strong Nor’easter System will track close to the coast and bring a variety of adverse weather affects to the region including Heavy Snow and Ice to the north, a snow over to rain situation in southern interior sections, the potential for flooding in Southeast Massachusetts and Rhode Island and the potential for strong winds for Cape Cod and the Islands….
….A Winter Storm Warning is now in effect from 7 PM Thursday Night through Noon Friday for Southern New Hampshire for 5-9ö of snow with less than ¼ö of ice accretion also expected as the snow mixes or changes to sleet, freezing rain before ending around midday Friday….
….A Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Thursday Evening through Friday Morning for Western Essex, Northwest and Central Middlesex, Franklin, Hampshire, and Northern Worcester Counties of Massachusetts for snowfall totals getting near or above 6ö with the potential of ¼ö or less radial ice accretion as snow will mix with or change to sleet, freezing rain and rain and then change to rain before ending late Friday Morning or Friday Afternoon. Interior areas along and just south of the Mass. Pike may require a Winter Weather Advisory for a period of time Thursday Night….
….A Flood Watch is in effect for Rhode Island and Southeast Massachusetts except for Cape Cod and the Islands as heavy rainfall will approach flash flood guidance with 1.5-3ö of rain. This rain would be sufficient for significant, urban and poor drainage flooding along with basement flooding. Rivers and streams would also need monitoring in this area….
….Wind Advisory may be required for Cape Cod and the Islands late tonight into Friday Afternoon for strong south to southeast winds….
….Some form of SKYWARN Activation is likely especially Friday Morning for the region. Ops at NWS Taunton may also be needed as well…..
A strong nor’easter is taking aim on Southern New England. The storm will have copious amounts of precipitation and bring a variety of weather affects to Southern New England. Here is the breakdown:
A Winter Storm Warning is now in effect from 7 PM Thursday Night through Noon Friday for Southern New Hampshire. In this area, 5-9ö of snow is expected before a mix or changeover to sleet and freezing rain before ending. The sleet and freezing rain may accumulate to ¼ö or less radial ice on top of the snow. This area is expected to receive the most wintry precipitation and the water content of the snow and the amount of ice will need to be monitored as the weight of the snow and ice could cause some tree and power line damage particularly if it’s a wet and heavy snow. Also, the heaviest snow will fall during the morning commute making the impact of the storm fairly high.
A Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Thursday Evening through Friday Morning for interior Northeast Massachusetts north of the Mass. Pike, North-Central and Northwest Massachusetts. In this area, snowfall amounts may reach or exceed 6ö before changing to sleet and freezing rain. The sleet and freezing rain will amount to a ¼ö of less of radial icing before the precipitation changes to rain before ending late Friday Morning or Friday Afternoon. In this area, its not clear that warning thresholds of 6ö or more of snow or ½ö or more of icing will occur. It is possible that it will be under or just over one of those thresholds. Future model runs will better determine if the watch will be converted to advisories or warnings this afternoon. Along and just south of the Mass. Pike, a Winter Weather Advisory may be needed for a wintry mix before changing to rain quickly Thursday Night or early Friday Morning.
A Flood Watch is in effect for Rhode Island and Southeast Massachusetts except for Cape Cod and the Islands. In this area, precipitation may start off as snow or wintry mix before rapidly changing to rain and it will be heavy at times. The rain could adversely affect the morning commute with the potential for significant urban and poor drainage flooding and flooded basements. Rivers or streams will also need to be monitored in this area. Rainfall will be 1.5-3ö in a short period of time getting near or exceeding flash flood guidance values in this area.
A Wind Advisory may be required for Cape Cod and the Islands late tonight into Friday Afternoon for strong south to southeast winds of 30-40 MPH with gusts up to 50 MPH possible. If the winds aloft are stronger or the inversion that will keep the strongest winds from reaching the surface is weaker, stronger winds could occur in this area and the threat is being monitored.
Some form of SKYWARN Activation is likely especially for Friday Morning for the region. Ops at NWS Taunton may also be needed as well. Further details on activation plans should be known by late this afternoon or evening. Below are the Winter Storm Watch/Warning statement, Flood Watch statement and Hazardous Weather Outlook from NWS Taunton:
