Hi all. Me again, although it's something completely different this time.
Has anyone tried fitting an IDE drive of any make EXCEPT Conner to a Risc
PC? I'd really like to replace the existing 210 MB drive in my machine but
it seems that Conner 420 MB drives are not made any more and they are
becoming rather scarce. Even Conner 540 MB drives are quite hard to come by.

Conner drives are of course known to work well with Acorn machines, but
surely there are other makes that will work as well. The new drive will NOT
have to work as a slave with the Conner (not even temporarily) as I can copy
everything from the existing 210 MB drive on to my 500 MB SCSI drive. I can
then install and format the new IDE drive and then copy the required files
to it from the SCSI drive. As long as the Risc PC will temporarily boot from
the SCSI drive, which I think I can arrange, it should all work OK.

So, has anyone used Maxtor, Quantum, Seagate etc successfully on Acorn
machines, particularly the Risc PC. Any comments on noise levels would be
appreciated as well, as Conners seem very quiet and from what I have heard
(no pun intended) some makes/models can be a bit more noisy.

Finally, here's your chance to have a good laugh at my expensive. How on
earth can I get an alternative backdrop to load when my Risc PC boots up? I
rather like the !Marble backdrop supplied on the February AU cover disk but
I have tried everything I can think of to make it load on boot-up but
nothing seems to work. (Ha Ha ... IJE calls himself a programmer.. can't
even get a backdrop to load on boot-up .. what a Wally etc etc ...)

Any comments much appreciated. 73 de Paul G4IJE @ GB7DAA.
