The "TinyTrak3 v 1.1" could be shorted to just TT3 and it could be set to
go out e.g. every 10 beacons. Going to a compressed beacon and enabling
SmartBeaconing will really help too. Every 30 seconds no matter what is a
bit extreme.
>Does the Tiny Track have more than one status Text?
There are "primary" and "secondary" settings, with each having its own
status text. Users can switch between primary and secondary by adding a
switch to the TT3. When the TT3 is first powered up, it will make a
transmission with the callsign & "TinyTrak3 v1.00" or whatever version,
along with no position. You could possibly be seeing that, or the owner
could have a switch to toggle between the primary and secondary settings.
Those two groups of settings could have different callsigns, different
paths, different status texts, different SmartBeaconing settings and so on.
It is also possible to set it to "send the status text separate" instead of
sending it along with a position beacon.
If you download www.byonics.com/tinytrak/tinytrak3.zip it contains the TT3
manual along with the configuration program. You can run the config program
even if you don't have a TT3 attached, but the manual also shows a
screenshot of the configuration program. I see the manual shows an example
of WIDE2-2 for the path, but the actual default path in the configuration
program itself is now WIDE1-1,WIDE2-1 with MIC-E enabled, but it leaves it
up to the owner to enable SmartBeaconing. Once enabled, the default
settings are a very reasonable 5 mph / 30 mins for the slow speed and 65
mph / 90 seconds for the fast speed with the proper settings for corner
pegging already entered.

That should of course have said "could be shortened to just TT3"... I also
see (reading my email in various orders) that I'm also repeating what has
already been said by others!

Even better, that bit of blatant advertising could be eliminated
altogether, since that information is already in the TOCALL of every
packet.
At least it's not as bad as the long yet uselessly cryptic WinAPRS
status...

Subject: [aprssig] Why APRS mobile?
>How come you want to run a TNC mobile ?

Because the essence of ham radio is two-way communications.
Because the essence of APRS is situational awareness. Having a channel
that is the be-all-end-all of information on all ham radio activities going
on in the immediate area.
Trackers are great assets at public service events where the hams need to
track all kinds of vehicles that often do not have a HAM on board. These
devices are able to be quickly installed at the start of the event and
collected afterwords. I have nothing against trackers at all. There are
many many applications for them and everyone should have a few...
But it makes little sense in a ham radio network concept to encourage
active ham radio operators to be driving around transmitting only without
listening, without reciving any local info, without any ability to receive
messages or be called in case needed, basically without participating in
the network they are using.
APRS is about receiving, displaing and exchanging tactical real-time
useful information amongst a network of active ham radio operators that are
doing something on ham radio. Of ccourse it is nice to have something to
receive, so someone has to transmit too. So nothing wrong with trackers,
but hams should be encouraged to install two-way communications where
possible so that they are a useful asset to the network, instead of just a
noise source with no means of being contacted.
Just my 2 cents.

I agree with Bob. In fact one reason to use APRS mobile is for Skywan and
if I see someone that has a tracker and know he is also a Skywan spotter
and can't contact him on APRS because he only has a tracker then what am I
to do when I need him as a spotter?
Just my 2 cents!!!

I usually query stations with ?APRSS to see what they are and if they
respond at all.

Unless you use the very short and efficient Mic-E compressed transmission
format. Then part of the position information is encoded into the TOCALL
field. The "fake" TOCALL then actually changes as you move around.

It may be advertising, but it tells other APRS users that it's a TT3. This
may not be so obvious if the TT3 is using MIC-E. The destination of APT311
can be a giveaway, but only when not using a compressed beacon. I don't have
any problem with the full spiel going out when it is first turned on, but I
still think it would be good practise to send out a shortened "TT3" every X
beacons.
