Okay, so "Drive by Wire" may have been a bit of an exaggeration -- Only the
throttle system is totally computer controlled (just try to rev the engine
in neutral). I'm looking for a job in their PR department ;)

But thanks to those people who replied with helpful suggestions both on and
off list. I'm working toward a "nice, neat, interference free" installation
solution.

Alright, when it comes to APRS infrastructure....I know nothing. What, is a
Tier 2 server? I go and have a look at the links and simply see a whole
stack of statistics and thats it! No support pages, no "how it works"
pages. At least at findu.com I can find "myself" :-)

The Tier2 Network is nothing more than a way to relieve some of the load
off of the Tier1 Servers. While there has been great debate over the pros
and cons of such a system (Tier2) it remains simply a CHOICE for APRS
operators.

You can connect to one of the Tier1 servers, such as
http://first.aprs.net:14501/ (Stats page) or http://first.aprs.net:14580
(Filter Port that you can attach your APRS program to). For a better
understanding of "Filter Ports" you can refer to
http://www.aprs-is.net/javAPRSSrvr/javaprsfilter.htm.

Or you can take some of the load off of the handful of Tier1 servers and
connect to one of the 38 Tier2 Servers such as
http://nebraska.aprs2.net:14501/ (Stats Page) or
http://nebraska.aprs2.net:14580 (filter port that you can attach your APRS
program to). There is even a "Round Robin" (mostly random choice) of one of
the Tier2 servers by connecting to http://rotate.aprs2.net:14580.

Tier2 servers are most certainly NOT a replacement for Tier1 servers they
are only a CHOICE that APRS operators can pick from. Tier2 servers have a
direct connection to Tier1 servers so they all have the same data available.
If you agree that spreading out the APRS load over many servers instead of a
handful is a good idea then connect to a Tier2 server. If you think having
only a handful of servers is the best route to go then connect to a Tier1
server. Sometimes having a CHOICE isn't a bad thing.

In ANY case I highly recommend that you have more than one server for your
APRS program to attach to. I've seen cases where an ISP lost a lot of their
direct connectivity to the West but kept a connection to the East. While
that shouldn't be enough of a drop in the ISP's bandwidth to kick you off an
APRS server, Murphy is always waiting in the wings.

Hi Chris

We are just doing the Chi. Mac. race this year. The boat is not mine and I
won't be putting ham gear on it. I want to write code that will receive
emails with the boat's position. Then form APRS packets and send the
packets to APRServe.

I've operated ham radio from boats in the past. It's great fun but the Mac
race is too intense and we're very competive. I'll be a helmsman and a
trimmer.

And dont forget the third choice which is to CONNECT A RADIO!
Operate APRS the way it was intended. A local real-time tactical RF
network informing everyone in the local area about everything going on in
Ham radio live and now, right outside your shack...

If nothing is going on, then do something in Ham radio. APRS is not an end
in itself. It is just a single common signalling channel anywhere and
everywhere to share HAM radio in real time so that everyone is informed on
a single channel of anything that might be happening (all around on any
other freq, or band or what-have-you).

If you are doing something in ham radio that anyone else might be
interested in, put it out on APRS. An object, A bulletin, A location, A
freq, an area, a heading, a bearing, a meeting, a net, some DX, some news,
etc... APRS was never just a vehicle tracking system. Its too bad that is
all most people see...

Is it because no one is doing anything else in Ham radio? No, its because
we arent remembering to use this common channel to inform others of
everything going on.. We can do better. And I DONT mean 24/7 bulletins
and 24/7 objects and 24/7 SPAM spread far beyond the local area.

Dont miss the local trees in your RF domain because of the global APRS
forest...

Sorry, I ramble...

Steve

I was able to download and compile validation.c
The following is my first attempt at a logon string. Is this correct?
==================  logon string  =================================

user N9TN pass 27029 vers "custom program"

=============================================================
The following is my attempt to form a TCP packet. Is this correct? I find
the tricky part is the addressing.
================== raw packet ==================================

N9TN-9>TCPxx*,qAX,CORE-2:@092345/4349.13N/08653.55WY306/015Cheap'n'Deep sec 6
Chicago Mac race

=============================================================

Does the above raw packet need to be wrapped in a AX.25 packet? My guess
is that it doesn't. How do I logon and send this packet to APRServe?

Again thanks for your help

I have installed a D700 in my 05 Prius. I don't leave it on when
I'm not in the vehicle, unless I'm using it with my ht as a cross-
band repeater, and then I use low power on it on both bands. I've
had no problems and it is working just fine.
