It's now free (see http://www.tapr.org/~kh2z/aprsplus/) so hopefully Brent
can sent you a registration code by e-mail. His address is at the bottom
of that page. I think he monitors this SIG, too.

i suppose the same thing is true for tracking vehicles, they do OK, but
the most asked questions on the voice channel are "how many cars are in
the stage" and "how many cars out of the stage?"
The nice thing about automating it with APRS or packet is that it will
free up the start person a little bit. they can more easily concentrate
on the task at hand.

Personally, I thought good old packet radio would be the answer :-)

Well, the barcode units I have also have a version that is a long distance
scanner. They include a spot beam for aiming the scanner and can scan from
6 ft away. You don't think it's possible to hit a runner from 6 ft if you
had a few seconds to spot beam the target? You could make the barcode
as wide as the runner's sign, about 1 ft? Sounds like we need sniper
training for special event volunteers...

Yes, I am with you. I was responding to KC9UMR's comment that he wanted to
track everything *without* the use of a D7, D700, or any other "specialized
equipment". To me, "specialized equipment" pretty much rules out packet
all together. :-)

Subject: [aprssig] station capability flags
There was some discussion in the past few days about not knowing which
stations were acting as Igates. One thing that has always seemed missing
in the APRS protocol is a way to indicate station attributes. Selecting an
icon is quite restrictive. What if it's a digi with a weather station, or
emergency power, or an Igate, or all of the above? How you you indicate
more than one, without doing network traffic analysis?
In the absence of a dedicated field added to the protocol, it seems to me
we could get a very limited set of flags by using the TOCALL SSID bits. A
quick scan of my tnc log file didn't show any TOCALL addresses using an
SSID other than 0.
One approach would be using the 4 bits to flag the 4 most useful attributes
that may not be indicated by the station's icon.
Another method, more complex, would be to define 15 common sets of
attributes indicated by the non-zero SSID.

I agree 100%. I was just responding to your comment that you wanted
to track your specific event without the use of specialized equipment.
To me "specialized equipment" means all of the hardware we have been
discussing in this thread. Maybe I misunderstood what you meant...

Sounds cool. But how much $$$ for one of those? :-)
That just sparked an idea. What about those "lazer tag" games that
were popular back in the 80's? How do those work? Do they have
unique ID's for each unit or are they just blanket transmit/receive?
Now that would be a great way to check runners in! :-)

There is a train that makes the trip up the mountain and an amateur
repeater on top (unless something has happened to them) that would make
communications and taking equipment up easier than wearing out a car. Does
anyone have the authority to allow the train to be used to carry hams and
their gear up and down?

Have any of you actually used the new operating system VISTA with WinAPRS??
If so, which version of WinAPRS were you using??
I'm sorry if this has already been addressed, but I have been on "vacation".
