Hello list, and again pardon my ignorance. Can someone point me to the
algorithm referenced below? I'm assuming that it has to do somewhat
with an RF version of what the non-token passing Ethernet world deals
with, but I don't want to assume anything.
There must be a formula of some sort? Thank you! MJ

And the link at the bottom of that page.

Subject: [aprssig] D7 question - answers
Ok - Sorry this has taken so long to answer.
Thanks to the following: Walter K5WH, Rod VE1BSK, Keith VE7GDH, and Pat
KA9SCF for responding to my question I posted on the reflector:
Does anyone know why my D7 only lists one station in all the memory spaces
when I press "List". Anyone have any idea how to get all the stations to
list instead of just one repeatedly? I must have done something to change my
settings, but not sure what?
I tried a couple of the suggestions - but the only one that worked was:
I have had this happen to me a couple times in the past. On 2 separate D7
Radios. Backup your memories and radio config via the MCP program, perform a
FULL reset of the radio, and restore your config, and your back in business.
I have yet to understand what causes it, but it is easy to recover from.
Walter K5WH
I finally tried this and the "List" is back to normal.
Thanks to all for helping me out.

Keith, thanks for your patience.
I guess I haven't made myself clear on this point, or maybe I'm not seeing
the obvious!
DigiNed will in effect become a (very) low-level digi once the remote
system is installed. DigiNed will provide the only path to the remote digi
for UIView and Xastir, neither of which will have radios attached. The only
(APRS) radio that will be attached to the system once the remote digi is
installed will be low power (1W) to a beam directed at the remote digi. I
don't envisage many, if any, mobiles accessing the WIDE1-1 due to my
location away from the highway, the low elevation of the site and the
antenna, and the heavy foliage around me.
DigiNed will remain exactly where it is now as part of my Linux system and
an additional UIDigi will be installed as the remote system.
This is why I believe that I need DigiNed to run as WIDE1-1.

I think I might have misunderstood your original message. I thought that
DigiNed was the one moving up to a location a couple of hundred metres
higher up. From your description (low level site, low power, beam pointing
at remote digi) it sounds like having it respond to WIDE1-1 would be the
right way to go... i.e. run as a "fill-in" digi.

I guess my original description could have been clearer. The mangled
attempt at describing graphically what I was doing didn't help!!
Thanks for your input, Keith.
Some good has come from all this - I've learned a lot and still learning.

As in all things...
Computers only do what they are told. (Even the tiny embedded ones!)
Just that what you tell them to do, is not always what you want, expect
or sometimes need them to do...
In this case, I suspect that any string sent from the attached GPS with
a $ at the start (just about all of them!) will get passed through to
the attached device on the PC port. Not stupid, just doing what you
told it to do... :-)
It's actually useful to know it can do that sort of thing.
If you have a PC with two working COM ports, connect one to the GPS port
(4800N81) and one to the PC port (9600N81 or E71, depending) and
experiment by sending from the terminal program on the GPS port, to the
other via the D7, and I expect you'll find that anything with a $ at the
start will get passed through.
You can also do that trick (connect a PC to the GPS port) to verify that
the D7 (or D700) sends posits in NMEA format "to" any attached GPS if
you need that functionality. The radio's PC and GPS port are physically
wired the same at the radio.
Have Fun!..
