Hello Peter,
My company builds weather stations. We have many many solar powered weather
stations around the world. In fact I just got off the phone with someone
installing one of our weather stations on top of an active volcano in
Chile.
There are a few old photos on our customer showcase page:
http://www.aprsworld.com/wind2/applications/
And a few on our new photo gallery:
http://www.aprsworld.com/gallery/
And a few on a product page:
http://www.aprsworld.com/selfcontained/
And many over the years on my personal photo gallery:
http://jamesj.jarviscomputer.com/gallery/wiscoy
I've built many solar weather stations over the last 7 years, so I would be
happy to help any way I can.
As a shameless plug for my company,

We need to purchase NEW laptops but have to have a serial port.
Our purchasing department says they cannot find any. I know they are hard
to find if at all. Does anyone have any leads? Not Ebay, not used. Must
be in current production.
I have heard of many problems with USB to serial adapters, and want to
avoid that. We must have COM1 or COM2.

Bob, the place where I work recently gave me a new Dell Latitude D620. I
have no idea if these are production "new" but mine was still in the box
when I got it 6 months ago and it has a serial port.
Good luck!

I have one of the newest D620's (we are a preferred customer of Dells
(Greater that 100k computers purchased annually)). Our mandate requires 3
years full support with our image. The D620 has ONE serial port. - NO -
Printer port!!!! (Yes I can no longer use my eprom programmer!!)
Great laptop so far (purchased this batch in April of last year with
May deployment).

Panasonic Toughbooks. But your purchasing Dep't has to have some $$.
They're expensive.
http://www.panasonic.com/business/toughbook/fully-rugged.asp
And I notice that only a few of the new models have the serial port.

The Panasonic Toughbook CF-51 (15" Screen 1.6GHz Intel Dual-Core Celeron)
has a real serial port. Toughbooks are ruggedized laptops that tolerate
high operating temperatures and are intended for mobile operation. (The
upper-level Toughbooks have all-metal cases and are used in military
vehicles, police cars, etc.) Details on my "semi-rugged" Toughbook here:
The is the machine I use for my mobile APRS operation with the D700.
See the installation here:
It does have a real serial port but no PARALLEL port, although oddly it
shows in the Windows Device Manager. (Apparently the parallel port
circuitry is in the machine but the DB-25 connector is in the accessory
docking station for this machine.
[ NOTE: Aside from the lack of SERIAL ports on modern retail laptops,
one should be aware that nearly all also lack PARALLEL ports, and also
lack stereo LINE-level inputs to the sound system. (Nearly all have
monophonic MIC-level inputs only. This can be an issue with sound-card
based ham applications.) ]
The only more-or-less off-the-shelf laptop with more than one serial
port (that I am aware of) is the Amrel Rocky which is also a metal-cased
ruggedized machine sold into the military and public-safety land-mobile
market. In terms of processor generations, it's not a bleeding-edge
design, being very conservatively based on a Pentium III Celeron and
older-generation interface-logic and video chip sets. This means no
issues with esoteric drivers for audio/video/Ethernet. Even Win98 will
install out of the box on this unit with no external drivers required.

Bob,
your purchasing people must only be 'looking' and not 'asking'. Serial
ports are still available on request from most major manufacturers of
laptops including Dell, Panasonic, Motorola, HP, and many others but they
must ASK for it specificially. Same thing goes for parallel ports.
