Bob,
Do you have a link to info for the direction sensor for the Air x ?
I have an older Air403 on the roof now and plan on moving it to another
location and would like more info on this modification.
In general I would have to say that in our area at the height the city
allowed us to put it at (32') it does almost nothing. That is why I am
moving it to our country house.
Thanks Todd K6TJS

Bob... Will you really be getting true wind speed from the wind generator?
A regular anemometer is designed to have near zero bearing friction so the
cup speed measures wind only. In the windmill case, you are using the wind
force to turn the load on the generator and so the blades are presumably
slowed. I suppose you have a calibration chart of windmill rpm versus wind
speed all owing for the generator friction, but it doesn't seem to be as
good as a more direct measurement.

Rich,
Try searching "smart home" on WWW.EPRI.COM and WWW.DOE.GOV
There should be some interesting info.
Also on my employer's site: WWW.PSEG.COM

Has anyone who is using Google Earth and the javaKML file figured out
any methods of handling messaging? It is one of the coolest APRS
clients if it had messaging capabilities especially for use with RACES
or ARES.

I am working on a updated version which will include plugin modules,
including messaging, objects and then others could add modules they need.

No, and you are entirely correct that it is not a substitute for a WX
station. But I guess after I bought my first Peet Bros WX station back in
1995 to add WX to APRS, and after the squirrels ate through all the cables,
I have not had that much interest in WX. My wife has cats and they are
pretty useless anyway, So I use them to tell the weather.
THeir length is proportional to temperature. If they are wet it is
raining. I enjoy tossing them out the door to measure the snow depth too.
So my coments were only towards the gadget and experimental part of the
hobby which to me is satisfied by playing with alternative energy where I
can. I do thank the surrounding APRS WX stations, however, for letting my
analyze the wind conditions in my area. I have driven by their houses to
see where their annemometer is located, and then use the FINDU info to get
an idea of the general wind in this area.
Again, I do want to standardize where possible on an application of the
KPC-3+ telemetry to read home alternative energy production. This way,
FINDU can have a CGI so that we can instanly see the APRS contribution to
alternative energy. Lets see...
Ch1 - System volts
Ch2 - Wind AMPS
Ch3 - Solar Amps
ch4 - user defined (maybe inddor temp)
Ch5 - User defined (maybe outdoor temp)?
This way, the first three could always be interpreted as alternative energy
power production. ?

Sinec my tree is the tallest going out a 1/4 mile in all directions, I am
hoping for something, though I am prepared to expect nothing [except a
total loss of the wind generator during the first lightening storm]...
I wonder what the city code has to say about "tree mounted" antennas (and
wind chargers)... hummh...

Subject: [aprssig] APRS data for Scout Events
Remember APRS is not just position reporting. Here is how we plan on using
APRS TH-D7 HTs at the winter camporee to send event data:
Those of us with D7's can enter our station number, troops and scores as an
APRS message addressed to the netcontrol at HQ using only the HT's keypad.
I will provide a Tm-D700 mobile rig at the HQ staff tent where they are
presently taking voice reports, and these messages will appear on the front
panel for the HQ staff to transcribe into their system.
If I entered STN14 as my MYCALL and then used a format something like:
T995 47
T887 56
T4557 66
Then that could mean from station #14, the reports for troops 995, 887 and
4557 are 47,56 and 66 respectively.
The TM-D700 can capture and hold up to 16 of these until the HQ staff looks
at them and deletes them to make room for the next round. The beauty of
this is that it offloads these reports from the voice channel and the HQ
staff can take them at -their convenience-, not at the demands of the voice
channel. The voice channel is very busy, but the score data comes in
bursts when the whistle blows for everyone to change stations.
This backchannel transmission of scores from D7 users helps mitigate the
peak backlog of all the voice reports.
In years past, I had proposed a special ARPS program to take the data
directly to a data base, but then never found time to do it, and not enough
D7 users to make it worthwhile. But this method above, and just using a
D700 display at the data entry persons operating position means it is
trivial to set up and operate and takes no special effort.
There is no risk in this expreiment. If it is not found advantageous for
any reason, the HT holders can still make the normal voice report too.
I just wish someone would implement my APRS-DTMF program, and then everyone
with an HT could key in their data, not just those with D7's.
