For an exhaustive discussion of the D700 fan noise issue, I would recommend
visiting the Yahoo TMD700A discussion group.

Simply put, there are issues with the D700 fan being noisy, regardless of
the temperature. My D700 is an example. It has been noisy at any temp since
the first day of use, several years ago. In temps below 32F, it makes even
more noise than at 72F. I'm not sure it would even spin at -5F.

The usual disclaimer of "Your Mileage May Vary" applies.

If anyone is having trouble downloading the file from Undertow's site, try
the following link. It should be there for at least a week or two.

www.ui-view.org/~pmap-8

The file is 18,485,145 bytes. Downloaded into Windows, you should end up
with a 17.6 MB file (8 bits to the byte, 1024 bytes to the kilobyte, 1024 KB
to the MB). I just tested it and I could download it OK from here.

I have a couple of small UPSs in use around the house. The 400va unit that
I have powering the headend for the network (dsl modem and wireless router)
uses a single 12V x 7AH battery, similar to the one that is the battery
back-up for the burglar alarm in the house.

The other one is a 1400VA unit and uses a pair of 12V x 14AH batteries in
series for 24V into the inverter. That's used to power a server that's
online 24/7.

How's coverage out there? I've got a tracker in a friend's car and he's
driving from California to Columbus, OH. East of Oklahoma City it seemed to
drop out for about 5 hours. Prior to that it had been working well, and I
was able to send it a few configuration commands. Looks like it's working
again now as he's approaching Memphis, though I haven't been able to get my
commands gated.

The tracker is running 10 watts into a 1/4 wave mag mount with a WIDE2-2
path. Should that path be OK back there? Can't run any higher power on
that setup without blowing a fuse - it's a temporary install and only has
power from the cigarette lighter.

Greetings,

I picked up a PK-12 TNC and it seemed fine on packet, so I hoped to use it
for my UIView APRS Igate. I've tried a couple of the UIView config files,
looks like there are a couple commands not recognized that I have to
adjust, but the biggest problem is what I get out of the TNC. Here is a
screen capture from a straight terminal program. It appears to display the
correct path information when I hear the station directly, but when it is
digipeated, I get a string of digipeater callsigns in there.

This is standard TNC-2 compatible behavior, and also for the PK-12. It's
controlled by the MRpt command, which defaults to ON. Setting it to OFF
will display only the originating and destination stations.

Also, if PK12 will accept the Host mode KISS command from UI-View, you
don't need to care what the TNC can do; UI-View will control it.

Scott,

Normal APRS in the midwest where there aren't any mountain top APRS Digis.
Oklahoma has lots of area that isn't covered by digis.. and Missouri only
has them around major citys along hwy 44 and 70.
