What is the smallest APRS tracker currently made? Or, perhaps more
important than size, the lightest? I have used a Pockettracker and
conventional handheld GPS with great success, but surely it must be
possible to shrink all of this down...
Thanks.

Tracker as in transmit only?
Here's a very low power model meant for the rocketry folks, operates
on 70cm. I've never seen anything smaller:

Less that 6oz, but you have to built it yourself:

I've got a surface mount OpenTracker that's really small. Add a Garmin
GPS18LVC (break it out of the plastic case to further reduce size &
weight). Attach to an Alinco DJ-C7 for a pretty small package.
If you want to receive as well, probably a D7 and a small GPS is the
smallest reasonably available package.

There's also the 300mW tinytrak + transmitter that's new on the Byonics
site.
I also saw a project where someone took a S/M Tinytrak, added a small GPS
board, and put it in a very small case that they then plugged in to their
handheld.

I have the same problem with the latest version of WinAPRS V 2.8.5.
I used to run the WinAPRS_pma3 version a year ago and did not experience
this problem with that version. Keep in mind though that this version of
the .exe program was for use ONLY with the later version of WinAPRS. I
believe it was Version 2.8.3 that this.exe file was for. It was NOT for
Version 2.5.1 which works just fine as is with PM 3. You can not mix a
later version of the WinAPRS.exe file with the earlier version of 2.5.1.
The programming structure was changed.
As far as the problem with WinAPRS Version 2.8.5 goes, I suspect the
problem might be with the execution of the ocx file but that is only a
guess. Since I am now using only the Tiger Maps, I am not too concerned
about it not working with the Precision Maps.
I am also sending this message to the WinAPRS SIG, perhaps someone on that
list can shed some light on this problem. Right now, I can not run PM 5
off the hard drive with WinAPRS Version 2.8.5.

I run my station from one of my motorcycle AGM batteries, with a smart
charger to keep it up and replace what I remove when transmitting.
The charger is going to be replaced with solar panels if I ever get them up.
I run a 100 watt HF radio on the 28 AH battery plus the uhf and vhf radios.
At 2 amps receive and 17 amps tx my 3 amp smart charger keeps up OK.

Please, anyone using lead-acid batteries, liquid or gelled, be _very_
careful using these in or near a building, or inside the passenger
compartment of a car.
I met a ham once that lost his business in a fire, started from a battery
left on a charger. I don't recall now whether the battery itself heated up
and started the fire or whether it was due to the hydrogen released during
charging and a spark somewhere. In any case, use the proper precautions.
Be safe!

I think you need to quailfy that with how much power you expect to transmit
... and.. will the batteries be included, or will it be powered by an
external source. Those are things that can GREATLY affect the size of the
unit.

Keep in mind that SMALLEST IS NOT NECESSARILY THE BEST!
I still think the TH-D7 with a GPS attached is the best over all portable
tracker. Of course this excludes balloon projects and the like.
