Weather permitting, this Saturday we'll be launching a balloon from
somewhere along CA highway 14 about 35 miles north of Mojave. It'll be on
144.39 and will have digipeating enabled - if you're in range, give it a
try (via N1VG-11 or AIR1). We'll be launching at around 9:00, and the
flight should take around two hours. I've written up a brief web page for
the launch at http://n1vg.net/balloon.

We're going to be short on people, and I could really use someone to
monitor the flight remotely and help with landing predictions, and possibly
to act as a backup to send cutdown commands if it gets away. Maybe we can
get an IGate configured to pass objects to make it easier to relay
prediction information. If you're interested in volunteering, let me know.

We could also use volunteers for tracking and recovery. If you're in the
area, feel free to join in. Current predictions put the landing site
somewhere near Baker.

That's very cool and I'll look for it this weekend.

What altitude do you think this thing is likely to reach? (I'm trying
to set an appropriate range of altitude color-coding for UI-HeightTrack.)

Probably around 100,000 feet. I don't think any amateur balloons have made
it much beyond 120,000.

OK I've set HeightTrack to color-code from black through
brn-red-org-yellow from 0 -100,000 feet. This will make the tracks of any
vehicles on the desert floor come out black while the balloon should have a
vari-colored track.

Are you going to have any HF radio out there? I think a 40 M or 60 M
NVIS dipole setup might be ideal for the distances involved.

Hardware:

Tracker2 (proto A board)
Two 2.1 MP CMOS cameras, 256 MB each
Garmin GPS 18 LVC
Heathkit HTX-202 at 1 watt
Twinlead J-pole antenna (unless I swap it out for a vertical)
8xAA lithium battery pack
MR6 clone transmitter (147.500 MHz) with CR123A battery
Parachute, radar reflector, and Kaymont KCl 1200 balloon

Will have temperature and voltage telemetry, plus an external temperature
probe if I can find where I put it. Oh, and an experimental cutdown device
if I have time to finish setting it up.

I hear they don't allow any balloon flights as all down there in Oz. Too
bad...

I'm going to be very light on radio hardware. I haven't even done any
t-hunting in a long time. I'll also be in a rental vehicle, so I won't be
loading it up with a ton of heavy equipment. Hopefully APRS messaging will
work out there.

In the past few days when I click on the Satellite tab on the Findu Google
map it says it does not have imagery at this zoom. I get the same at all
zoom levels. Is it just me having this problem?

Ron,

Yes, I'm getting the same thing for my station as well. Maybe google has
changed something in the past few days?
