Over 35 GB now. Load's back down to under 10% now, so feel free to pound
away. The APRS TV mirror link is back up, too.

I'm curious to see what everyone's results are. I need to run the tests
against the production version of the test track, but against the 0.9
version (which might be the same), I got:

967 packets decoded by a KPC-3
970 decoded by a uTNT
911 decoded by a Tracker2 (still being tuned and tested)
991 decoded by a Tracker2 tapped into a KPC-3's TCM3105 demodulator

So 991 is the score to beat so far. No fair turning on PASSALL!

Steve,

I have had no luck burning the Nero version. The file sizes match exactly
what you listed, but when I try to burn the CD, I don't seem to have any
audio tracks and the _READme.htm file on the CD is entirely unprintable
characters. I'm using Nero Burning ROM v 7.5.7.0, downloaded today. Is
anyone else having this problem?

I don't know. (This is the first message I have received like this.) I
orginally created the file in Adaptec/Roxio.CIF format only.

Scott N1VG then converted it to Nero format and then offered to put it
on the server as well. He claims it burned successfully on his copy of
Nero.

I burned it successfully with Nero Express 6. Will the full version of Nero
read .cif files? The .nrg was converted from the .cif using a 3rd party
utility.

Subject: [aprssig] Mobile/Tracker TX power

For what it is worth, the TX power on most APRS mobiles is usually
insignificant compared to receive power. The RX and TNC are on all the
time drawing about 70 mA (I think) and so that is 70 mA-Minutes. Whereas
the TX transmits for only 1/2 second every 60 seconds and draws maybe 1.2
amps at high power (?). But this is only 10 mA-minutes. So the TX power is
only about 14% of the total battery drain.

So, yes, it saves battery power to run on low power, but only less than 15%
of life, yet running on low power sacrifices over 7 dB of link margin. In
many cases, getting in, is worth more than saving just 15% of battery
life..

If you run a 2 minute rate, then the TX power is down to only about 7% of
total battery life power, and is usually insignificant to mission success
compared to being heard..

Anyway, just a thought.

Scott,

I haven't found anything in Nero Burning ROM that will read in a .cif file.
Since I just bought the full Nero package, I haven't had a chance to check
all the other utilities yet.

Hmm, don't know then. The .nrg file works fine for me. Anyone else tried
it?

What vesion of what operating system are you running? RTF (Rich Text
Format) is supposed to be a more or less portable text file format that
supports basic formatting (underline, bold, italic, etc) unlike basic ..TXT
files. It should be openable in either Windows Write, Wordpad or MS Word
if you have it. I throught all flavors of Windows could deal with RTF.
Apparently Microsoft is going to drop support for the .WRI file format
(nice for formatted text file READMEs) that goes all the way back to
Windows Write in Windows 3.0, in the version of Wordpad that comes with
Vista so I thought I was going to something more universal..... I may
have to redo the readme as an HTML file that will open in your default web
browser.

Actually the contents of the readme file are nearly the same as my web
page at:
http://wa8lmf.net/TNCtest/index.htm

When the disk is run on a PC, it will only autorun the CD-ROM part. (I
assume the display of files and readme DID appear automatically after
inserting the disk and waiting a few seconds.) The audio part will not
start playing by itself as it does with a single-format purely audio CD.

To play the audio part, you will have to launch the Audio CD Player from
the Windows START menu. Do START - Programs - Accessories - Entertainment
and launch the "CD Player" (not Media Player!). This should give you a
panel that looks like a car stereo player with track select, start/stop
buttons and a volume control.

Are you trying to play the CD with something like Windows Media Player? If
so, use the feature to "Rip" the CD, then cancel that operation. Now go to
the Now Playing menu and the tracks should be listed.

Basically your computer CD-ROM is trying to read the data files and is
ignoring the audio files. If you play the CD-ROM in a regular CD player,
like one in your car, then it will play the tracks normally.
