I am wondering if doing the conversion, then zipping the file has caused
links to something or other to be broken. I have downloaded many iso files,
never had any issues..
Can zipping a cif or nrg file break something, Has this been done before
Scott.. Can you unzip the file you created and have it work? I know you
said you burned the nrg file, before or after zipping, :-)

I'm re-downloading the zipped nrg file now to test it. I had to open the
zip file and add an updated readme after it was initially posted, so maybe
the zip program mangled something in the process. I'll check it out - got
another 30 minutes to go on the download.

NO. ZIP comression is a lossless file compression format.
I tested the files roundtrip. I uploaded the original CIF file to my
own wa8lmf.net server. Then Scott downloaded it to his server, added my
readme (which I created as an afterthought addition to the ZIP archive)
and then re-uploaded to his server.
I then downloaded all 540MB from his server back to my PC, opened it
and made a disk to verify everything was perfect before announcing the
CD on the various mailing lists today.
The issue is as I explained in my previous post. The mixed-mode CD
autoruns the file display of the CD-ROM part but DOES NOT start playing
the audio part automatically. You have to launch it with the audio CD
player applet in the Windows Entertainment group to make the audio play.

Well, no, I only browsed the CD with Explorer, I am using XP Pro, and the
Media player never tried to open.., I thought when you see autorun.inf on
the cd, it was supposed to start running on its own.. Now, I will say, I
did not read the whole Readme file in the zipped downloaded file...

Downloaded it last night, all 500MEG+ zip file, two hours over 2MEG DSL
(I know, overheads etc) but not a problem.
Burnt it to a CD this morning, just to check, then had a quick listen
with mk1 ear-ole, just to check the disk burnt OK.
The track numbering is a bit odd. Track 1 is very short and blank,
track two announces itself as "Track One", track 3 announcement is
"Track Two" and so on....
The "De-emphasised" audio is "very" muffled, compared to what comes out
of the rig speaker jacks hear in the UK. I'm not aware of any US/EU
differences in Ham FM radio charactersisics, but I suspect some TNC's
will struggle with the "De-emphasised" tracks, where as they will work
just fine with a real FM radio speaker jack feed. I have a collection
of TNC-220's, none have a problem with radio speaker feeds, so long as
you load the radio with say a 10r resistor, and that's more like keeping
the radio's speaker output chip bias point in the right place.
The "Non de-emphasised" audio examples are as expected very "bright" to
say the least.
I was playing it on a true audio CD player (a 10 year old discman) into
'phones, with all the audio enhancements turned off, just a flat
response, as near as. I'll feed it to a TNC tonight, and see what
happens. Let you know.
Overall, a nice idea, well done that man...

I have added this to the TNCtest index page at:
http://wa8lmf.net/TNCtest/index.htm
just above the file download links.
"READ THIS FIRST !!!
The image file you download produces a _*MIXED MODE*_ disk that combines
CD-ROM data and audio CD tracks.
* _This is not a normal CD_ROM._
* _This is not a normal audio CD._
* It is a combination of the two. When you place this disk in a computer
CD drive, you will only see the CD-ROM data part of the disk. _*The audio
tracks will NOT show, and will NOT automatically start playing.*_
Go to the Windows Start menu and do Start -- Programs -- Accessories --
Entertainment, and select the "CD Player" applet. You will get an
on-screen display that looks like a car stereo CD player with start, stop
and track select buttons and a volume control. Use this software "device"
to play the audio tracks.
In a non-computer audio player such as a boombox or DiskMan (or a CD-ROM
drive being used stand-alone outside of a computer), the drive may
mistakenly see the first (data) track as a defective unplayable audio track
and do nothing. If so, use the track selector button to jump to the next
(first actual audio) track.
The de-emphasis on track 2 sounds muddier than most radios because the
de-emphasis in most radios doesn't conform to the official de-emphasis
curve. Many radios don't even begin to roll off until 1K or higher
rather than starting at 300 Hz, in an effort to have "punchier" audio.
The recording reflects "worse case" de-emphasis roll-off.

Are any of these formats mentioned burnable in a linux environment? It
appears that all them are meant for windows applications, just curious as I
would like to play with this......

I've generally had the best luck imaging CDs with the RAW .iso image. It
is trivial to create such images on Linux by just copying /dev/cdrom to
somefile.iso. Once you have such an image, the 'cdrpack' project includes
all of the linux cd burning tools such as mkiso and cdrecord.
http://www.nu2.nu/download.php?sFile=cdrpack13.zip
You probably also need to put wnaspi32.dll in the 'bin' directory of that
structure. The documentation on that site (www.nu2.nu) is extensive
regarding CD burning and bootable CDs.
