The airmail program is an Email Client (like Outlook or Thunderbird), an
Email Transfer Agent Client (connects to POP and SMTP servers), an Email
Server (handles POP and SMTP connections) and an interface (roughly a BBS
- server and client capabilities) to amateur radio modes such as the SCS
Pactor TNC's, generic pactor devices or legacy Packet.

Think of a version of JNOS compiled with a Windows GUI.

EVERYBODY WITH AN INTEREST IN DIGITAL COMMUNICATIONS, EMERGENCY OR
OTHERWISE, SHOULD BE FAMILIAR WITH airmail2000.. It's a great program!

There is open source software that should work with the SCS devices that's
been available for 15+ years. That's all on the far too long to-do and
to-try it list. (I'm expecting a 10 to 25% improvement in throughput too
but I won't mention that until I've had a chance to test it... :-) )

Never mind. I'll play with it myself. I already see that there are
several secondary functions it performs. This isn't the right mailing list
to be discussing it anyway. I'll take it to the LinLink mailing list. ;-)

Several comments have been made that WinLink "doesn't run under Linux".
Here's a sound card software solution for Pactor-1 that runs under Linux!

We did some airplane tests today and I came to the conlusion that an RF
brick would be the way to go.

We used a HT taped to the plane.

You are not really concerned about seeing the screen, or anything else.

The pocket tracker was such a good idea. - discontinued of course, maybe a
higher power version.

Anyone make a VHF transmitter only ?

Hi All,

I've discovered two versions of the v8.3 firmware, one reporting 1998 and
one 1999.

The PROMs are different so it's not just a date change, anyone know what the
updates were?

The woman's bathroom of the starship enterprise, "Where no man has gone
before".

Knew about that one, and about the "hfmodem" driver for Linux by Thomas
Sailer, a soundcard driver for Linux that can do Pactor-I.

Another thing that people have done: Run Airmail under WINE on Linux.

One could start with just TNC control of the SCS TNC's and "hfmodem" driver
in order to do automated mail delivery. Add more functionality over time
via the all the really-cool libraries/apps available for Linux/Unix/MacOSX,
like "hamlib".

FWIW I installed Airmail and the associated programs yesterday, so I'll
hopefully be able to answer a lot of my own questions now. It's just _so_
hard to force myself to boot into that OS. hi hi

One nearby ham suggested that we write a daemon instead of a GUI package,
keeping more with the mail-server and Unix approach, leaving the mail
client to whatever standard Unix mailclient people already use. I think I
like that idea the best. It could server that machine and a
small/medium/large network of other computers seamlessly. I would think
auto-switchover between different types of mail delivery should be
relatively easy as well, just deliver via whatever method is fastest and/or
most reliable at the time.

Let's take any possible further discussion of this to the Linlink mailing
list (wetnet.net), a much more appropriate place.

Andrew,
I've pretty much been trying to view these all day. I think the files are
a little too big and are choking your system to upload. Could you repost
with some smaller sized files so that we may see them please?

Thanks,
Stan/KC7EHJ
