Most light-aircraft have removable, circular (mostly) access panels on the
wings and fuselage, held in place with self-tapping screws. I've known of a
replacement panel being fitted, onto which is mounted an antenna base.
Beware of CASA regulations regarding such fitment. Check with the pilot or
owner first.

A pilot friend of mine recently added a NMO mount to the belly of his plane
during its annual inspection. The clearance under his plane is not enough
for a 1/4wave 2m whip, so we bent it backwards about 6 inches down and it
runs roughly parallel to the body. a 70cm whip works great. We've
actually talked 37 miles on 1watt GMRS radios. I also plan to put a wifi
antenna on it as well. The particular NMO we got is not your run of the
mill mount. It has a removable center pin that looks like a miniature golf
tee and is rated up to 6Ghz. Got it from tessco.com

Hi Andrew
I made an antenna mount to fit the wing strut of a Cessna 172. The
pictures can be found at:

I've used an HT with a rubber duck to check into a repeater net 200+ miles
away, so you'll be able to get SOME results with almost anything.
The suggestion to use an inspection panel is a good one, but if CASA is a
problem, you could simply have another aviation antenna added and use that.
It would help if you could get it tuned for 144 instead of 120, but I
suspect it would work in either case as long as your transceiver could
tolerate the mismatch.
BTW, if you normally fly pretty high AGL, then mount the antenna on the
belly. However, if you normally fly low, like a crop duster, you might be
better served by mounting the antenna on top.

A previous owner of my '76 Cessna Cardinal had an extra aircraft antenna
mounted on the belly with a cable terminated with a BNC connector in the
cockpit so that an aviation handheld could better be used as a backup
should both the regular transceivers fail. I recently tried the antenna
with a Kenwood D700 running at the lowest transmit power setting and it
works fine. (I don't want to trim the antenna length to better preserve
its backup use.)

I have used a rubber duck on a suction cup extension cable. I have also
used a wire dipole taped to a window, a spare aircraft-band antenna that
was intended for an aircraft band H/T, and a 1/4 wave mag mount on Cessna
landing gear. All of the above have done fine for APRS tracking with a 2
meter H/T. If you own the airplane there are plenty of aircraft antennas
available for VHF business band that would work fine. Or you could buy a
wire aircraft antenna and trim it down a bit.

How does one wire the Infamous Sony-RatShack into either the MFJ-1270C or
an AEA PK-900? I looked at the AEA manual, and SUPPOSEDLY, I need to make
some PIA (self defined) Interface Box of sorts, (Capacitor &/or Resistor
Combo) in order to get a GPS to function with it. Anyone care to comment ?
I have patched the RX into my Belkin USB< >Serial adaptor, and SEE the GPS
strings, but not sure (fairly sure) the Signal is NOT being transmitted.

I still am not familar with "RatShack-Sony GPS" Do you have a part number
or something I could Google with?
I am using a couple of the DigiTravelers myself, great little "faceless"
gps...
