I dunno where you will be in Quebec. But APRS coverage is rock solid across
Southern Quebec (Montreal vicinity). My stepson goes to college in Montreal
and when I drive from vermont to Montreal the digi coverage is wall-to-wall
from 5 miles south of the border to and all around Montreal. I run WIDE2-2
and often hear my packet repeated as many as four five times.

If you run a D7 with a 1/4wave magmount you will print to the APRS-IS
80-100%.

Montreal <-> Tadoussac roughly.

Excellent stuff,
My folks will be pleased, XYL won't :)

I've just finished programming a bunch of IRLP repeaters into the Radio.

I think you will find rock solid APRS coverage along the entire route,
Ontario/Quebec has outstanding APRS participation, particularly along the
routes between the major cities

Hi...

From personal experience...

Use a "Wet" type motorcycle battery, fix it down, and run the vent out
through a hole in the floor, if "inside" the passenger compartment.

Use a standard type split charge relay, with a 21W bulb in series with
the charge feed to the new battery to act as some sort of current limit,
not forgetting a fuse (5A max) on the vehicle, or "Hot" side. 99.9% of
the time, you wont see any glow, let alone light, unless you let the
battery run way down, then start the car to charge it, then maybe only
for a minute or so... A smaller fuse too, on the feed to the GPS supply
of course.

You then have a simple indipendant low power supply for GPS and alarms
etc that stay's up when the engine is off.

Low voltage cut off systems are available to protect the battery from
deep discharge, but are just as easy to make yourself. Use a P type
power FET, or latching relay as the "switch".

Jelly cells. Not recommended without special charge regulators, as they
need much more careful charging than a car alternator will give them,
hence use a wet (flooded) cell battery.

Or, one of the commercial switched mode 12V to 12V chargers, but that
starts to get very expensive, though is the "ultimate" solution.

There was a link to a US company listed on here a while back, that makes
all sorts of DC input SMPS battery chargers, 12V "UPS's" and cut outs
etc... http://www.powerstream.com/ I think.

Of course, you could put another car type battery in there (minus the
lamp, and with a larger charg fuse) with the split charge system, then
have all the radio's, PC's, GPS's and other gadgets indipendant of the
car system. The biggest problem, is usualy finding space to physicaly
fit another battery of that size in modern cars.

I've seen several instalations of this type to keep alarm systems
running for extended "off" periods, one even had a solar charger as the
"off" times were months! It doesn't take much current drain over a few
weeks to make even the biggest battery struggle to start an engine...

I showed the program, Viewpoint a while back that has the ability to
display maps from MapSource with APRS data in a web page. Viewpoint also
has the ability to send and receive APRS messages. Viewpoint does require
that a particular callsign be assigned a "Passcode" in a minimal attempt to
prevent unauthorized access. Viewpoint will handle outgoing message
retries for Viewpoint generated messages, and will "ack" messages to
callsigns that have been used to generate outgoing message for up an hour
after the message was originally generated. So it is important to use a
callsign that is unique. Viewpoint also supports Reply/Acks. Viewpoint
has its own built in web server and screen capture routines for MapSource,
and runs on Windows XP. Viewpoint can be seen here:
http://viewpoint.no-ip.org:8080.

At a minimum, what if any downsides would there be to implement sending
messages to CALLSGN-E ? I can see none other than figuring out the email
address it needs to be routed to. QRZ has converted email addresses
listed on their user profiles to graphics though eham still provides those
addresses in clickable/text format. Assuming the person has an ARRL
address won't work (as was pointed out in other emails). Just wondering
if there's an automated way of doing this.

Presumably some sort of registration system will need to be implemented
but we've already discussed the downsides to that... though in terms of a
one way RF/APRS messaging to email gateway it may not be too much of an
issue.

The other problem would be preventing potential abuse (ie, making sure
KG4NRC is KG4NRC).
