Wrong. No mapping ones though. This one is open-source and non-mapping.
Think of it as a HamHUD for the Palm:

Why don't you just leave the GPS powered all the time.
I leave mine on all the time.
Even on a trip with my motorcycle with a smaller battery.
It will take a long, long time to run the battery down.

Ah,
the point from which this all runs is off an accecory line.
It is fused on a plug i can pull out in case of problems.
Valid point tho.

I agree. Most GPS units take such a miniscule amount of power that it would
take several days of operation to run the battery down. If you do want to
run an auxiliary battery to run just the GPS, and possibly the TNC and XCVR,
then you'd need a charge regulator like what West Mountain has.
http://www.westmountainradio.com/SuperPWRgate.htm has all the charging
circuitry to keep from overcharging the battery.

My GPS uses 90mA. A 9v battery is 120mAH. Maybe newer ones do better...

Some GPS's aren't bad, sore are horrible.
The Evermore engines (Deluo units) have commands you can issue to the GPS to
conserve power even more using a windows app (can't think of the name off
the top of my head).
My "WeeTrak" project (http://www.aprsfl.net/weetrak) will run on it's 2ah
battery with a Evermore GPS engine and a VX2 at 3 watts beaconing for well
over 12 hours per charge before the battery drops below 11.5 volts. Before
I turned on the power saving options in the GPS, that was only about 7
hours. Considerable mA savings for turning off features in the GPS I didn't
need.
Another example though is my older Garmin GPS16 I have on my car... It would
drain the battery dead in about 36-48 hours if the car wasn't driven hooked
up all the time. Had to change that after needing jumped after a 2 day
flight at the airport garage. It's now powered by a power switching
transistor tied to the output of the 8 volt regulator inside my D700.
D700 is on, GPS is on. D700 is off, GPS goes off. No more dead battery.
I also know of a couple guys using shockey diodes with 7ah gel cells in
their cars to run their trackers. Car running, alternator charges gel cell.
Car off, tracker runs on the 7ah battery.
Just my thoughts :)

I have a GPS18 (PC version) When I turn the car on, it finds the sats and
comes up in about 15 sec. The GPS is on the ACCESSORY line, so it has not
had any power to it.
Go to the GARMIN web site and look at the technical specs on the 18. It has
almanac backup for up to 6 MONTHS built in.
Something is not right with yours, unless the car has been moved a 1000
miles between times the GPS was last on.
There are a bunch of ROM flash upgrades on the GARMIN site for the 18 also.

We had a bad day for weather here.
It seems to be doing ok now, I have moved it on the dash a bit.
Seems the winscreen wipers were shielding it.
Thanks for your help

Andrew,
1 Yep, and low voltage drop diode from the ACC. circuit, or use a relay
arrangement that only turns on when the main battery is charging, and
disconnects when you stop the engine.
2 Probably enough resistance in the wiring & internal to the Gel-Cell,
unless you have a whopping great big Gel-Cell...
3 Check this out, should do the job...
