I saw the demo at Dayton and talked to the guy for a bit (in the 30 minutes
or so I wasn't in my own booth!) but I can't remember what it was called
now. The Hamvention site has nothing on it anymore, no list of exhibitors
or anything, so that doesn't help. Maybe I've got his card somewhere.

I've used both VX-1Rs and VX-2Rs for APRS, specifically for balloon
flights. One of each type fell about 13 miles on two separate flights when
the backup APRS beacon detached from the main payload string. Both were in
padded lunch coolers that struck the ground at an estimated 60 mph. Both
are still in use, though the SMA connector on one is a little bent. The
VX-2R was not found for seven months and was none the worse for wear.

Both radios have been used with great success for APRS, SSTV, and for
regular HT use. A cheat sheet, especially for unlocking the keypad, is
very handy. I usually lock the keypad for APRS use and especially for the
VX-2R I have to refer to the manual to unlock it. Personally I find the
VX-1R's functionality easier to use for the "hidden" options.

Someone commented earlier that the VX-1R is 2m only. Both models (-1 and
-2) are 2m/70cm TX/RX and have extended receive capabilities, including TV,
VHF-air, and broadcast FM.

You will need 3.5mm 4-pin connectors to roll your own interface cable.
They can be hard to find, but try www.byonics.com - I got a few from him
when ordering some TinyTraks.

They're pretty common for camcorder audio/video connections. Next time I
find a good source for those I'll make sure to get a batch. Most of them
have cables that are more bulky than I'd like for radio use.

Not a web-page but a local IP-based program to do this already exists.
The M0CYP UI-InstantMessenger utility operates either as an add-on for
UI-View, or as a stand-alone application running on an IP connection
logged into an an APRS server, or with the AGW Packet Engine for
over-the-air operation. Get it from M0CYP's website at:

Drifting OT...but
I don't know Tim. Thought I would be dead in the water, but I've dropped
my F6 three times with enough height to pop the battery off and I can't
even find the impact points. Another time when it skidded across the
pavement, face down, did do some scratching....(:-( but I'm sure they all
would.

While running aprs software, connect to the internet and send and receive
messages. I am not aware of an existing web page. If you find one please
pass it along.

I keep thinking about building a page like this. I'm going to have to write
the services behind it at some point, anyway. My biggest concern has been
avoiding unauthorized use. How do you go about authenticating everyone,
without having some sort of labor-intensive signup process with a human
reviewing everything?

I figure you could have the system give a new user a code that must be sent
via RF into the network to authenticate themselves. It'd be inconvenient
for the user if they're not set up for it or don't have a local IGate, but
it doesn't require intervention.

APRSPLUS, or one of Brents follow on projects, had a page for sending
messages authenticated with the users code for Aprsplus. We could do the
same with the aprs-is callpass functionality.

Yeah, but that's just going to generate a support problem - people are going
to want to know where to get the callpass code, and it really doesn't add
much aside from obscurity.

If they have to generate an authentication message on RF, then at least
you've made them show that they're on the air and more likely a real ham.
And since we've seen them on the air, us Igate operators can gate their
traffic to RF and reasonably assume that they're legally entitled to be on
the air.

I see 3 issues that need to be addressed:

1. Legal authority to transmit. APRS messages can be retransmitted on RF by
Igates anywhere in the world - what do the rules say about messages directly
generated by non-hams? Do the Igate operators assume full responsibility
for those third-party transmissions?

2. Inappropriate content. Even if they're authorized users, there are
restrictions on what can be sent in these messages. Some of that can be
handled with filtering.

3. Impersonation. Might not be a big concern with regular QSOs, but it
worries me because I'm building devices that accept remote commands and have
the option to authenticate solely by origin callsign.
