But you are overlooking the big fact that a single user of WIDE2-2 is only
adding QRM to his local area and one hop beyond. But an HF user of
GATE,WIDE2-2 is adding his packets to DOZENS of VHF networks all over the
country. This is bad for two reasons.
1) It is out of area QRM to all those users and you could be thousands of
miles away.
2) Since it is coming into their local area from a GATE that can be two
hops away, they are POWERLESS to contact the GATE operator if such QRM is
causing unwanted interference.
Whereas if all HF==> VHF gated traffic uses the ORIGINAL receommended path
since 1994 of VIA GATE,WIDE1-1, then wherever that QRM lands, it is never
more than 1 hop from the source and the locals can resolve the problem at
the local level with a simple voice call to "ole' joe" the local GATE
operator.
We must make this point clear in all of APRS. That is, that it is just
not fair to the APRS network to inject out-of-area-packets into anything
except the local network, so that it remains under LOCAL control. And 2
hops is NOT local.

Subject: [aprssig] Looking for a manual/schematic
I picked up what I believe to be an original Kantronics KAM all mode TNC at
a hamfest yesterday and I am dire need of a manual and schematic so I can
repair it. I'm hoping someone has one laying around or in electronic
format, I will gladly pay shipping for a hardcopy.

You mean the one that doesn't have KAM manuals? ;-)
KAM has historically provided zero resources for older products, especially
online. You can't beg, borrow, or steal any manuals/firmware/etc. for
anything more than abour 2 or 3 years out of production.

Subject: [aprssig] Anyone know what DISABL is?
Hi All,
Ever since I started operating APRS, I've seen this station that IDs with
DISABL. Does anyone know what this is? Is this an old experiment long
forgotten?

I'm getting the idea that this is in SE Wisconsin altho I could be totally
wrong. KA9SCF-15/WB9WLS is where I'm pulling this information from.

There's a station like this in the Kansas City area, too, among other
places. Using a terminal program try connecting to it (C DISABL). Once
connected, you'll probably be able to determine the station callsign with
just a little searching.
