Great stats. Do we know how many of the "reported" New-N Digi's are really
New-N Digi's? I've seen several Digi's that have the correct over lay but
don't have the correct settings. I've even seen a couple that report New-N
while they still transmit RELAY,WIDE. The reason they changed the over lay
was because they read (or where told) the correct overlay settings without
knowing the correct New-N settings. I'm not trying to be critical but it
seams to me that because they report to be New-N we simply believe that
everything else is setup correctly, or do we double check each one before it
makes it to the stats page? Ok maybe it's a picky point, I just simply
wanted to get across to the group that not all reported New-N Digi's really
are and the number could be slated. Admittedly it's probably a very small
percentage of the total numbers but still a point I wanted to make.

I agree.
It would be a travisty for someone to change their Overlay to show New-N
and then not do all the necessary tweaks to make the digi truely take
advantage of all the New-N efficiencies. So I agree with you. Check them
all! thanks Bob

Subject: [aprssig] APRSTV.com Video Podcast Launched

Several people have responded to my request for a place to store and
distribute the videos for an APRS related video podcast. Thanks to their
generosity I'm able to keep costs to a minimum, which is important when you
are giving away the product.

The first video podcast features the Amateur Radio Society at Tech, a group
of ham radio opertors that attend Texas Tech University, launching a
high-altitude weather balloon loaded with several amateur radio payloads,
including an APRS tracker.

You may visit http://www.aprstv.com to download the first video in the
Quicktime movie or iPod formats. You will need the latest version of the
Apple Quicktime Player or iTunes to view the videos. As the episodes get
archived I'll provide some lower resolution video in other formats.

If you have iTunes installed on your computer, visit the following link to
view the APRSTV iTunes page. Please write a review if you are so inclined.
http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=164018864
(link will not work if iTunes is not installed)

Anyway, that's about it. I hope you enjoy the podcast. If you have a
suggestion for content or about how to make the show better, please let me
know. Also, if you have video that is related to APRS, I'll see if I can
get it featured on the podcast.

This is an excellent demonstration of the power of telemetry on APRS.
Because of the standard APRS format for telemetry, this enables sites like
the VK3 site above and FINDU to have general purpose graphing and display
code that will work witih anyone that transmits telemetry.

Since telemetry is built-in to the KPC-3+ TNC's, this is a powerful system
at the fingertips of most APRS operators. FOr example, we use this
telemetry for all of the PCSAT2 telemetry:
http://www.findu.com/cgi-bin/pcsat-tele2.cgi

and for our prototype APRS ocean buoys:
http://www.findu.com/cgi-bin/tele2.cgi?call=usna-1

All we have to do is transmit it in the APRS standard format, and then call
up the FINDU URL and see it nicely displayed... from anywehre on the
planet!

I didn't get the original of this snippet, maybe it was from some other
group and Bob cross-posted here, but I do hope the original gave findU
credit for doing the storing and graphing ;-)

Comments:

Technical quality of video images... excellent
BUT, you have to download the entire file before playing it. I would much
rather have a lower quality video image and be able to stream the video. A
video that can be streamed can be *much* longer than the download first
type. Yes, they *can* be both the same, but if you don't want to view the
entire thing you can stop a streaming video before the whole thing downloads
... but if you tell someone that you have to wait 5 or 10 or more minutes
before they see frame one it would discourage them from even starting the
process.

What was the point of the video?... who was it's intended audience? Was it
edited from the 'original' version? Was it made for this podcast, or are
you just taking anything related to APRS?

Fancy graphics... somewhat overkill for my taste (same for the music)
