I have to agree with Mike DJ5AV's comment that a selective listing of
contacts from one day is no way to argue the case for the performance of
anyones latest "wonder antenna"!
Also I can bear out Mikes statement of getting good results from a simple
antenna that people the other end find hard to believe.
A case in point.....at my new QTH I am restricted to all but the simplest
of loft mounted antennas by a landlord who insists I put up NO external
ones. Add to this a restricted height problem in a low appex continental
style roof space and I am severely limited to anything with height.
I recently "knocked up" a vertical for six meters after finding an old
transverter in a box of radio junk I had stored. I could not get a full
quarter wave vertical (not enough height) so I wound a helical vertical on
a piece of nylon rod, with four ground planes. I used old coat hangers
soldered end to end for the wire......not having any suitable wire to
hand, and after careful trimming I also had an SWR approaching the magic
1:1!!(as we all really know this means next to nothing in real terms!!)
In three days "back on the band", running only 10 watts from the
transverter I worked the following: S79UUU 5/9, OZ1DJJ 5/9+, SP7AWG 5/9,
SQ9QU 5/9,DC7LOS 5/9+, DG1AAE 5/9+, SM7CMV 5/9+, SM7RYO 5/9, EA7DUD 5/9,
the list goes on and on and includes ZB, LA, H4, LB, CT, CN2, 9A, HA, ES7,
and one close to Felix's patch HB9. The lowest report recieved was a 5/5
to 5/7 with QSB!
Now does this mean I have accidentaly hit on the "magic" perfect SMALL
antenna for "The Magic Band"......Should I put the details (deliberately
kept sketchy and vague here in case I need to patent it!! HI!) on a CD and
sell them on the Net?........(I thought "Coat hanger-CAP" might be a
catchy name!).......or could it be that conditions were just "up" on those
three days and I could have got similar results with any resonant bit of
wire?........probably the latter!!
Snap shots of antenna results over short periods of time mean absolutely
nothing in the long term.......most tried and tested well known antenna
designs have been put to the test over many years, through all types of
band conditions, before becoming accepted as truely performing to their
claimed specs, and generally accepted as being worthy contenders in the
battle for that elusive rare dx!!............now does anybody want the
details of my "Magic Band" coat hanger special?.......it will be available
shortly on CD and also include details of my other antennas, the coat
hanger 2 meter co-linear......the coat hanger 4 meter J-pole........the
coat hanger "coat hanger"......(yes you can even use them to hang up
coats!)..........just kidding!!
