Useful TCPIP DOS programs for testing
(Available in Win95/98/NT)
For testing on a local LAN (& over the internet as well).
Open a Window DOS box prompt to use the following:
PING
Bounces a Packet to the specified IP address & times the reply (if
sucessful)
eg:
C:\windows\ping 192.168.0.2
IPCONFIG
reports the MAC address & IP address details of the PC it is run upon
eg:
C:\windows\ipconfig
or
C:\windows\ipconfig/all
TRACERT
traces the routing of packets
eg:
c:\windows\tracert 192.168.0.2
FTP
DOS command line FTP (File Transfer Protocol) Utility.
eg:
C:\windows\ftp
gives
ftp>
enter HELP
for information
ARP
eg:
C:\windows\arp -a
gives IP address & MAC address of other PCs on LAN a PC is connected to.
NETSTAT
Shows active IP Connections
eg:
c:\windows\netstat -a
Shows routing table
eg:
c:\windows\netstat -r
Shows TCP, UDP, IP, ICMP statistics
eg:
c:\windows\netstat -s
Use this one in Windows, not from a DOS box prompt.
WINIPCFG
Displays the MAC address & IP address of the PC it is run upon.
Use from a windows command RUN box, press the START button to show the
MENU where RUN is located.
Found about them in a book for the library called "Network+ Study Guide".
It is a text book for Microsoft "PC Engineers" in training.
Dewey number 004.65 GRO. ISBN 0-7821-2547-6
With some SKYPE assistance from Kevin VE7OVY/ZL1OVY to get started
"sharing" drives between my LAN Windows PCs, the book has explained quite
a bit & given me more tools to test things with.
