Many UK operators will tell you that the 50MHz band is grossly underused.

I'm not sure how things are in the rest of the world, but I suspect the
same applies.

Well I was wondering if 50Mhz activity should be included in the
major contests HF contests such as the CQ-WPX and the CQ WW.

Currently contesting in this band seems to be concentrated in national
or regional contests and as such the number of potential participents
is very low.

Classing 50Mhz in with the HF contests would I feel encourage a *vastly*
increased amount of usage and get more radio amateurs to bother with
setting up a decent station and expose a darn site more propagation or
opening which are probably missed simply because 50Mhz gets classed
as a dead band most of the time and passed over.

Here in europe the activity seems mainly confined to a few weeks of
summertime sporadic E or only half a dozen 6m afficionados listening to
the band at any other time.

I feel 50MHz is a complete waste of space as it currently stands.

I wonder what others think, and whether it's worthwhile proposing it to
national societies, the IARU and anyone else of influence.

This could be a real and unique chance to turn 50Mhz into a real band
and not just for the occasional use.
