The 6m band in SOuth Africa has for some weeks now been basically dead.
The only real activity taking place currently is on the digital modes,
using the WSJT software for Meteorscatter and Tropo work.
This past weekend saw the PEARS VHF Digital contest, and there were
around 20 stations active on WSJT from around the country. Strong
signals were copied in Johannesburg from Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and
Durban. ZS4NS in Welkom and ZS4SS on the Vaal were also heard and worked
in Div 6 using the JT6M mode. Today (Monday) around midday strong
digital signals were copied from ZS1AGF and ZS1NAZ in Cape Town.
As we head into the downside of the solar cycle European openings will
become less and less likely. At the best of times 6m is seasonal, with 2
distinct TEP seasons during the year. The last season however was very
poor, and for the next few years it will get progressively worse. There
has been one notable sporadic opening (opinion is that it was an F2
opening) to Ethiopia, Nigeria and Gabon. That was on May 1, and nothing
has been reported since.
Should Andre (or anyone else with 6m equipment) have a computer and
internet access, I suggest he get hold of either Hal ZS6WB
(zs6wb@telkomsa.net) or myself (zr6dxb@mweb.co.za) and we will gladly
assist in getting him onto the digital modes. By remaining active during
the quiet time he will be assured of being ready when conditions
improve, and won't miss the best part of the next cycle! Also I suggest
he have a look at my website (http://www.qsl.net/zr6dxb ) for more info
and resources regarding the 6m band. I can also be contacted on my
mobile phone, 0837179210 for more info (after 6.00pm only please!).
