WWFF, SOTA, POTA and IOTA
Weekly Wrap Up

The WWFF program is celebrating its 12.5th anniversary with a special Activity Weekend on March 8–9, 2025. This event invites amateur radio operators worldwide to activate and hunt WWFF references, commemorating over a decade of promoting portable operations from nature reserves and national parks.

It's great to see so many VK7 operators taking advantage of the excellent weather and heading out to summits or parks to activate over the past week.

Jim, VK7JZ, travelled to VK4, where he activated the Passage Peak SOTA summit on Hamilton Island and the Castle Hill SOTA summit in the city of Townsville. Castle Hill holds significant military history, dating back to World War II.

Lance, VK7TO, headed to Tinderbox with his Mountain Topper in hand and activated both the Tinder Box Hills SOTA summit and the Tinderbox Nature Reserve for POTA. He made ten CW QSOs, successfully qualifying both references. Later in the week, Lance, VK7TO, activated a BOTA (Beaches on the Air) reference, Dorman Point Beach, located near Connellys Marsh in Southern VK7.

Matt, VK7MAT, travelled to the Powranna Nature Reserve, a small bushland area situated across from the Powranna Dragway. While there, Matt, VK7MAT, made a park-to-park contact with Lance, VK7TO, who was operating from Tiderbox Nature Reserve. This QSO qualified Matt, VK7MAT, for a POTA award for completing 100 park-to-park QSOs.

Stuart, VK7FADZ, faced a challenging walk through dense scrub while ascending to the Esperance Peak SOTA summit in the South West National Park. His efforts were rewarded with fantastic views and 8 points for the activation.

Rodney, VK7HAM, Al, VK7AN, and Peter, VK7ZPE, headed to Mattingleys Beach to be the first to activate the reference. This beach is one of the newer POTA beach references, added in January 2025. This area of Bridport has seven POTA references within a 1.5 km radius.

With the long weekend and the WWFF anniversary combined, it's sure to be a busy weekend on the air.

NEWS FROM THE NORTH WEST

Due to very little traffic in recent months on the FM 70CM. Voice Repeater VK7RDR located on the Dazzler Range, it was decided to add SSTV Analog as an additional mode to this repeater.

In addition, software for connecting to an International SSTV Gateway has also been implemented on VK7RDR.

At this time, the Gateway has 6 active SSTV Repeater Stations DB0BEN, DB0PTB, DB0UHF, HB9ZF, PI1DFT and now VK7RDR.

It is activated daily for a 12 hour trial period from approx. 1000 hrs - 2200 hrs and transmits a beacon image at 5 mins after the hour, showing current active gateways.

Users please note that if they wish their image to be transmitted to the gateway, a 1750 FSKID Tone for approx. 2 Secs at the start of the transmission is required, transmissions without the 1750 tone will only be relayed locally on VK7RDR.

CW ID of your call sign should also be activated to ensure all info is included in the date & time stamp.

All images are available for viewing on the following Web (the actual Links

www.vk7ax.id.au

worldsstv.com (look for VK7RDR)

International gateway/repeater stations [ max.cqsstv.com/VHF.php (look for 6 active gateway stations)

Regular Local stations using the repeater & gateway are VK7KT, VK7MD and VK7AX.

Remote stations can connect via Allstar Node 28348 and at this time include VK3EME and VK3NDH.

ZL4OI regularly connects via Allstar 28348 using IaxRpt Web Transceive mode to access.

This facility is open for all amateurs and we encourage its use in an attempt to activate an otherwise unused repeater which was destined for closure.

ENJOY

Northern Tasmanian Amateur Radio Club Incorporated

www.ntarc.net

Last Club Technical night Colin VK7ZCF showed us his latest purchase. A version of the ever popular ATU-100 antenna matcher that appears on quite a few Internet sites.

He went with the full “do-it-yourself” kit, at least this guarantees the soldering is reliable!

Even in kit form it still comes with the surface mount microprocessor pre-installed and the O-Led display module fully functional.

Colin opted for the EXT version which extends the usability from the standard 1.8 to 30 MHz up to 50 MHz

Literature indicates that it is good to 100 Watts with the auto matching guaranteed reliability down to 10 Watts.

Even after the auto matching is complete it will require a permanent 10 to 15 Volts DC to hold the relays in. This is not really a problem as you most likely want the display continuously visible, but the power consumption would have to be taken into consideration when going portable.

Itâ€Ös a very presentable and compact little unit and nice to see the Chinese manufacturer has given credit to the fact it is based on the original open source design by David N7DDC.

If you have been following the State-wide SSTV images this week you may have noticed that Colin has subsequently finished winding and mounting the coils.

At this rate we should get a rundown on its functionality by next Club Tech Night, thanks Colin.

Ross VK7ALH arrived with a Yaesu FRG-7700, purely just for interest.

I am sure we all remember the Yaesu FRG-7 communications receiver, with its Barlow Wadley tuning set up. Well the 7700 is one of the modern versions sporting a digital display.

Basically it is a desk top compact communication receiver, for the reception of AM/SSB/CW and FM signals between 150 kHz to 30 MHz. It has 12 memory channels and can also be powered from an internal battery pack. This one, like so many is awaiting repairs of some description, in this case and quite obvious from the pictures is in need of a new auto on off function selector.

According to the decoded manufacturerâ€Ös serial number it came off the production line back in November of 1980, so it is one of the earlier ones. This model was replaced in 1986 by the FRG-8800.

This got me thinking, just when was the original FRG-7 released?

Evidently it was back in 1976, well thatâ€Ös getting close to a fifty year anniversary!

Just for interest, it seems rigs after about 1980 only displayed Yaesu on the front panel as the name with the model. As opposed to say the Yaesu Musen FRG-7, they were all made by the Yaesu Musen Company Limited of Japan though. Thanks Ross, happy selector hunting.

As always pictures will be available on the NTARC Web site under “Blogs” for this broadcast. NTARC Blogs

WICEN Wake

As REAST and WICEN Tasmania (Sth) members will know there has been a massive amount of work done by David VK7DMG to bring WICEN Tas (Sth) under the Associations umbrella of REAST Inc.

This work was completed with the public notification in the Tasmanian Government Gazette issue of 5 February 2025, with the cancellation of the WICEN Tasmania (South) Certificate of Incorporation from 9 January 2025.

This prompted an invitation to all past WICEN Members to attend the WICEN Wake Luncheon at the Top Pub at Cygnet on the first day of Autumn 2025.

During the Luncheon there were a range of remembrance and thank you toasts made by the WICEN Tas (Sth) past president – Justin VK7TW that included:

    Cedric Lockley VK7CL (SK)

    Roger Nichols VK7ARN

    Chris Webb VK7CDW

    David Goodrick VK7DMG

    Stu Braunholz VK7NXX

    Brian Welch VK7BW

Emphasis was given that even though the WICEN Tas (Sth) Association has been incorporated into the REAST Inc organisation that it doesnâ€Öt mean that the traditionally WICEN supported activities stop. We are still involved in Equine Endurance and portable and mobile communications.

As per the amalgamation agreement signed between REAST and WICEN – the REAST Committee has created a WICEN sub-committee and this group has a budget, equipment and support of the REAST Committee.

We thank everyone who came along to the luncheon and celebrated WICEN history.
