Subject: FT817 maintainance tips
I recently asked about this matter recently.
The reason why I had to remove mine was that I wished to inspect the
all the PCB's visually to see if I had a problem.
This was because I started to notice a new and strong sproggy appearing
on the 40m that I found unacceptable and thus I wished to inspect the PCB's
for problems.
It transpires that Dave G0BHD had the same problem, although in his case
he noticed a sproggy on 70cm.
It turned out to be an earthing problem with the tarnishing of the spring
leaf earth contacts that press against the chassis from the pcb's.
Cleaning them all solved the problem.
The other hassle is if you remove the PA pcb which is interconnected to
the main pcb via a 3 pin Molex connector.
I have not found a way of being able to easily realign the pcb's easy so
the Molex connector aligns correctly.
The answer is to snip the header on the PA pcb and solder three lengths
of *25* SWG tinned copper wire to the pins and thread them through to
the Molex receptacle on the main pcb. Once the PA pcb is in situ you can
snip any excess wire off.
I'm surprised that no one has ever mentioned any of this in the
various internet newgroups.
However, as a subscriber to such groups, I notice that the average
group users are as thick as bricks in all their postings anyway and
never get involved in such maintainance, hence no such intelligent
postings are ever made !
Same with the other dire newgroups these days, their content is not
worth a carrot and I often wonder why I even bother to read them!
Just like the crap that propagates from North America on packet these days.
Any attempt at a serious discussion is *instantly* turned into a turd
by the insane ramblings from guess who and his lemming like followers ;-)
