Well I've repeated the tests I did when I bought my 817.
Rear socket connected to an Avair AV600 power meter (not brilliant but not
bad either), FT817 set to 21.2MHz FM, quality dummy load (N socket, SWR
1.15 at 2GHz), cables are Greenpar PL259s (silver plated, teflon), cable is
RG223U double screened.
I use 21MHz as the power readings on the AV600 agree closely with a Bird43
at this frequency, below this, the sampling is a bit dodgy and the power
readings are low compared to the Bird 43.
Internal NiMH cells, these haven't been charged for a while nor has the set
been used on them either.
Display reads 10.0V.
4 power indications are available 1 bar, 2 bars, 3 bars, 3 bars flashing.
Power Stated power Measured power V offload V onload
1 bar 0.5W 0.5W 10V 9.2V
2 bar 1W 0.9W 10V 8.7V
3 bar 2.5W 2.5W 10V 8.2V
3 flash 2.5W 4.25W 10V 7.6V
External 30A 13.8V PSU connected to power connector. Voltage measured as
13.72V.
Power Stated power Measured power V offload V onload
1 bar 0.5W 0.5W 13.6V 13.0V
2 bar 1W 1W 13.6V 13.3V
3 bar 2.5W 2.5W 13.6V 13.2V
(none) 5W 5W 13.6V 13.0V
External 2.8AHr SLA connected to power connector. Voltage measured as
12.60V
Power Stated power Measured power V offload V onload
1 bar 0.5W 0.45W 12.3V 11.7V
2 bar 1W 1W 12.3V 11.6V
3 bar 2.5W 2.5W 12.3V 11.2V
(none) 5W 5W 12.3V 11.0V
I measure the SLA terminal voltage with the DVM when the 817 was producing
5W and it had dropped to 12.3V.
Interesting to note that the flashing bars only appear when the displayed
voltage is less than 12V. I wired the 817 to the variable PSU and jacked
the voltage down from 13.8 to 10V. At anything above 12V displayed, there
was no icon for hi power and it only flashed when the volatge was below
12V.
So a classic case of what the spec says and what actually happens not being
the same.
