I remember reading many years ago about LADA. When the "Russians" wished
to start up in car production, no-one except italy would provide the bits
and pieces, so FIAT provided the Russians with everything. They even
provided the parts for a factory. That is what a LADA is, a FIAT. NOT a
good recommendation of course, as that was known as cr‚pe suzette when I
was 16 and noticing motor bikes and scooters and that was over 40 years
ago. The FIAT was a no-no. Too many faults and always breaking down. No
change there then.

LADA jokes were common. Why did LADAS have rearscreen heaters. To heat
your hands up whilst pushing them. How do you double the price of a LADA.
Fill it up with petrol. What do you call a convertible LADA. A skip. etc.
etc. There were dozens of them. Only the SKODA had a worse reputation.
They lost ALL resale value once bought and the ONLY way you could sell one
to a garage was trade one in for a newer SKODA.

When "Lead-free" petrol came about and many modern cars were being
converted to take it, I recall the new Maestro was unable to be converted
for some reason. Engine bore size or some such problem that I was unable
to find out about. However, the LADA came into its own. It had been able
to take lead-free petrol for several decades! Even the ancient LADAs that
might have still existed could use it. Talk about planning for the future.
Rather like the tales of Russian aeroplanes being kitted out with valve
radio equipment as they knew that all transistorised equipment would burn
out in a nuclear flash. The Russians were never as daft as many made out.
