Not sure exactly what you're doing...ssh!
If the file transfers are between machines on your own LAN, then 1408kbps
would seem a bit slow. It may be worthwhile moving the kit in an attempt
to improve the signal.
If the file is being downloaded off the net, then 1408kbps is fast (it's
only 1152kbps here), but many people mistake a stated figure like 11Mbps
as a means to speed up data, rather than just the available bandwidth for
the data fed into WiFi from the net. Your Internet connection being the
bottleneck.
Downloads over my 54Mbps WiFi wouldn't be any quicker than 1152kbps, and
with encapsulation, actual throughput is somewhat less.
