Hello People,

Just a bit more on our local 802.11b playing......

Earlier this week I outlined what had been happening locally. "The
establishment of a 1 Mbit/s link over a distance of 7 Km allowing the use
of HTTP and FTP services between both users."

Since then, a few days later, we where able to establish a 2 MBit/s link
over the same path even though the signals where at the same levels as the
1Mbit/s link of a few days earlier??? It is thought that the difference
in modulation methods between 1Mbit and 2Mbit/s, with 2Mbit being more
realiable, allow this to happen? Maybe someone else has an opinion?

None the less, it worked and it worked well.

I did a ping session from my end, using 56bytes of data, I sent a total of
313 packets for a loss of only 3 packets. I then tried a ftp of a 10
Mbyte file and to my amazement, this was completed in 93 seconds!!!!!!

Try that at 1200 Baud!!!!!

Still, we have a long way to go.

As I have said earlier, get yourself down to your local computer shop,
look on ebay, go to swap meetings, get some 802.11b geat and have a play,
my opinion, is that it will be well worth it.

(Just a note on ebay, I saw a PCI Wlan card that was hovering around
$20.00, I hit the "BUY IT NOW" button, thinking it would display the "BUY
IT NOW" price, instead, I automatically bought it!!!!! Anyway, it arived
and was pressed into service in a spare computer and well, it works great.
I have not used it in distance use yet, only locally, but it just
highlights that you do not need to spend hundreds on wlan gear. In fact,
if I coupled that card to a ex-MDS paytv dish I have and that was all that
I had, in WLAN gear, my total commitment would have been $28.00 ($8.00
being the postage on the PCI card), however, I have spent a lot more than
that, this was before I knew what to look for and where to get it.
Hopefully, you can follow what is happening here, learn and get going for
as little as possible.)

Regards

Mark
