Hi Dave,
Yes I have explored the road of Winpack Telnet mode over a dial up modem
also. I ran it while getting aerials set up at my new QTH.
This is my script file to access the ZL2AQY Xrouter node over the internet
on Telnet port 23:
; The hot key.
HOTKEY F4
; The title.
TITLE Telnet ZL2AQY Xrouter
; Send the command to connect to my local Xrouter node ZL2AQY via Telnet.
SEND c zl2aqy.ath.cx:23
; Wait for the connection to be established.
;
WAITCON |Winsock error
SEND $MYCALL
WAITFOR Password (or "guest"):
SEND XXXXXXX (the password)
WAITFOR Type ? for list of commands.
I can use the ZL2AQY port for DX Cluster without trouble. It is not port
23.
Yes I was not able to run compressed (binary) data over the internet
Telnet connection, like you found.
I also did not require a dot before the $MYCALL. Maybe it changed in
Winpack V6.8 & was needed in older versions.
7 Plus works good over my dial up modem, YAPP (bimnary data again) results
are unreliable. Often YAPP, "plain doesn't work" over port 23 Telnet.
I did not use FBB unproto for the mail list. I just have Winpack use the
LR option to get the bulletin headers.
The BBS beyond the ZL2AQY internet connected Xrouter node is a F6FBB type
BBS ZL1AB. It is reached by a RF connection from the ZL2AQY-1 G8PZT DOS
Xrouter. The DX Cluster at ZL2AQY is an Apache Linux server. It is reached
directly & no RF connection is used. However RF access on 2m port of the
ZL2AQY Xrouter is provided for DX Cluster users.
A password to the ZL2AQY-1 Xrouter node is available upon application to
Eddie ZL2AQY. He welcomes more Amateur users to his node & DX Cluster.
Without a password, guest users can only monitor things & are not
permitted RF access. Guests can login toi the DX cluster for SWL type
access. They are not permitted to send DX Spots.
I use Winpack Telnet mode over my home Ethernet LAN as well. To get the
best results & get YAPP to work properly with my Home Xrouter node (not
internet connected), that has three radio ports fitted, I have to use port
2323. Port 2323 is a TELPROXY port that passes ASCII codes more
transparently than regular port 23 Telnet does.
I also have quite good results with the NBF Packet terminal, Mail &
Bulletin reader program as well. NBF is a 32 bit Windows application where
Winpack is only a 16 bit application ( & might not work under Vista or
later Win O/S?).
Need any more example scripts for Winpack? I can supply copies of what I
have here.
Once the Winpack script files are set up & in the case of NBF the config
files are sorted things work like "clock work". They save having to
remember a load of keyboard commands & replies to login prompts.
