Yes I realised that that method was available, and I realise that it
takes longer to explain it than actually do it, but why oh why wasn't
the Win98-XP left-hand panel with its Move/Copy/Delete options retained?

And what you describe is a Move operation. What if you want to Copy?

Dragging and dropping works but needs a little skill and far more care
to avoid Moving into the wrong folder.

And this from an OS which is far bigger than XP. My guess is that the
left-hand panel feature has actually been retained in Win7, but is not
activated, and will only be activated at some future Service Pack or
Windows version release, when it will be trumpeted as an "improvement".
