Hello all clean hams.

In the past they always used natriumhydroxide and fat, very often
coconut fat. (made from copra) It was boiled together. Very important is
to mix the exact quantities of material, so exactly all the NAOH will
react with the fat. Otherwise you will get soap that is far over
the PH of 7. (neutral) NAOH is aggressive for the skin and dangerous
if it gets in your eyes. As a lot of fat is needed in the factories
who make it, they also make other products for which fat is needed
like margarine and cosmetics. (Unilever, Procter & Gamble)
Soap made of NAOH + fat most people don't like anymore because
it bad for the skin. (too high PH, aggressive)

Hard soap is bought lesser nowadays, most choose for liquid soap.
They did their best to make a non-aggressive soap. All kind
of chemicals are in a liquid soap today, very often more than 20.
Look on the package...

Docters say that it would not be wise to take showers every day
and clean yourself with soap. You remove the fat and a dry skin
afterwards is to be expected. Only water would do no harm.
Also, if one would take away the protective materials from the skin
every day, bacteria would penetrate easier into the skin
and might cause ulcers.

There is a painter in Holland, who has 5 wifes and makes every
few minutes a new painting. He said the last time he washed
himself, was 10 years ago. "I don't smell" he says.
He sells paintings to the common man.
But I figure Rembrandt van Rhijn or Vermeer did not wash themselves
either very often, like all the others at the time.
